Working steam engines, the story of Cottonopolis, and hands-on galleries in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station. Free, and the live demonstrations are the bit kids actually remember.

An immersive walk-through at Depot Mayfield, a few minutes from Piccadilly station: more than ten themed rooms including the Bubble Ocean balloon pit, a bubble bath pit, an LED underwater room, a hot air balloon set piece, an infinity room and a selfie room. Timed entry, roughly 60 to 90 minutes inside, and every surface is designed to be photographed.
Adults are about £24 on the door and children aged 3 to 12 about £19, with under-3s free and proper discounts for booking ahead, so book ahead. It is closed on Tuesdays. Socks are mandatory for the bubble bath, children need to be 8 or over to do the VR room solo, and there is no venue parking - the NCP and Q-Park near Piccadilly are a five-minute walk.
Is it the thick end of £90 for a family of four? Close to it, which is a lot for an hour and a half. But for a rainy afternoon with a five-year-old who wants to swim through balloons, it lands better than the cynics expect, and it finishes on 27 August 2026.
Know before you go
- Closed Tuesdays, and socks are compulsory for the bubble bath pit.

Wythenshawe Park & Community Farm
A big south Manchester park with a proper community farm - pigs, goats, horses - a Tudor hall, and enough playground to earn the trip on its own. All free.
