Haigh Woodland Park still does most of the work: woodland trails, big playgrounds and a hall lawn made for picnics, with a miniature railway, high ropes and crazy golf as the paid extras. Mesnes Park in the centre has had a £6.1m restoration, and the Three Sisters is the local oddity, three colliery spoil heaps turned into a nature reserve with flat paths round a lake.
Wet weather used to be the borough's weak spot, and it no longer is. Imagine That! opened in the Grand Arcade in July 2026, three floors of child-sized town sold in three-hour sessions at £24.95 a child. Run and Jump on Caroline Street is the long-standing cheap frame at £6.50 on a weekday, and the Wacky Warehouse at the Red Robin pub is £6 a child with adults in free.

Treetop nets, high ropes and forest tubing in the woods of Heaton Park, and it is outdoors, not indoors. The cheap one is Treetot Nets: an hour bouncing on nets in the trees for ages 1 to 5, from £5, with a grown-up joining in.
A big lake with easy flat paths, bird hides and a decent play area. Free, close, and a good one for scooters and a picnic.
Working steam engines, the story of Cottonopolis, and hands-on galleries in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station. Free, and the live demonstrations are the bit kids actually remember.
A T. rex skeleton cast, live frogs in the vivarium, Egyptian mummies and a genuinely good natural history floor. Free, university-run, and less overwhelming than the big London equivalents.
