Theme parks, high ropes and climbing. Check the height limits before you promise anything.
Nothing on this list is free, so treat it as the treat list: birthdays, the last week of the holidays, the afternoon you promised something in a weak moment and now have to deliver.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach is the big one, and the rides are height-restricted, so measure at home before anybody's hopes get up. Gulliver's World at Warrington is built for two to thirteen, which means nobody ends up watching from behind a fence. The Crocky Trail near Chester is muddy, slightly lawless and adored by anyone over about six. The steam railways belong here too and are better value than they look: East Lancashire, Ravenglass and Haverthwaite all sell family day fares, and a train that makes real smoke holds a four-year-old's attention longer than several things costing three times as much. Book online where you can. Most of these are meaningfully cheaper than paying at the gate.
Pleasureland with a new name and a new deal: free entry and pay-as-you-go rides from £2. The seaside funfair is now Adventure Coast, split into themed lands from pirate cove to steampunk thrill rides, and you only pay for what your kids actually ride. The main park has closed for 2026 and reopens in 2027.
The pier with the big wheel. Free to walk on, with fairground rides paid for in tickets, an arcade at the front and another halfway down next to a family bar.
The big pirate-themed arcade on the Central Promenade: free to walk in, with the Pirate Flyer ride, a ghost train, the Camel Derby and a prize shop. Kids eat free with a paying adult, all day, every day.
Seven and a quarter inch gauge, a loop of nearly a mile through Runcorn Town Park, a ride of about ten minutes and no charge. It has run since 1979, and only when a volunteer turns up to drive.
A council-run indoor adventure centre in Droylsden: Clip 'n Climb walls, a 54 metre crawl-through cave, a high ropes course hung from the ceiling, bouldering and soft play, at leisure-centre prices. Weekends and school holidays only for most of it.
A miniature railway with a ride of over half a mile around Brookside Garden Centre in Poynton, past a signal box, a fairy wood and the engine sheds. £2.50 a ride for anyone over 2, and Halloween and Christmas runs cost the same.
A new woodland-themed adventure golf course at Troutbeck Bridge, just outside Windermere, with little animal characters to spot round the holes and a golf-and-swim family deal with the health club pool next door.
Two 18-hole mini golf courses threaded through life-sized dinosaurs next to the Trafford Golf Centre driving range. A family of four plays for £32, and the second course is half price on the same day.

Indoor climbing wall near Castlerigg with 120-plus routes and an instructor-led kids' hour, plus Rookery Woods next door: outdoor zip line, slides, maze, castles and soft archery for under-nines at £6 a day. Cafe and free parking.
Bowling on 18 lanes, more than 100 arcade games and dodgems in The Orient at the Trafford Centre. Early bird bowling is £7 a game each before 1pm. The arcade is where the real money goes.
Two 18-hole mini golf courses on the New Brighton seafront, one built round local landmarks and one copying famous golf holes. £28 gets a family of four round one course; do both with lunch in between.
Two indoor 18-hole adventure golf courses over two levels, next to the Odeon at the Trafford Centre. One round is £9.25 for ages 5 to 16 and £6 for under-5s, and weekday early birds get two for one.
Steam trains along Preston's dockside with a museum shed full of engines, a playground and a tea room all on one ticket that covers all-day travel. A Saturday railway, so check the calendar before you promise anyone a train.
A big bouldering centre by Victoria station with over 300 problems. Children climb for £9, but unless a parent is already a registered climber your first visit has to be a booked family introduction.
A 24-lane bowling alley on Peel Leisure Park with bumpers and lighter balls for small bowlers, plus arcade games, pool, table tennis and air hockey. A game is from £9.95 online, and Tuesdays are half price.

A volunteer-run narrow-gauge steam railway at Hesketh Bank where a family ticket is £15 and you ride as many times as you like. The line is only about 400 metres long, which is about right for a three-year-old.
A small, old-school climbing wall on Lake Road in Ambleside with a bouldering room for anyone from six and a cafe looking over it. Two hours for £11 on the days the fells are out of the question.
Four floors of free-play arcade machines, pinball and consoles in an old mill in Bury: pay once to get in and every game is free. Open Thursday to Sunday, but Friday evenings from 6pm are adults only.
The best age match of anything on this list. Reviewers put the sweet spot at 2 to 10 and say a 4-year-old can do essentially the whole park; the map colour-codes areas by age and puts mini zipwires beside the full-size ones. Budget four to six hours.
The big one. Nickelodeon Land covers the primary ages properly while the Big One and the wooden coasters wait for brave older kids. August queues are real; go in expecting them and it is a great day.
Tower Top's glass floor 380 feet up, a proper circus that still knows how to play to kids, and the famous ballroom below for a fancy ice cream. Buy the attractions you want rather than the bundle you will not use.

A serious bouldering gym in Trafford Park with a proper kids' programme: coached hour-long sessions for £11 including shoes, classes from age 4, and a parent-led play session for under-5s. No ropes, no harnesses, just deep mats.
Heritage steam and diesel trains on a 12 mile line from Heywood through Bury and Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall. A Day Rover lets you hop off at any of the seven stations and catch the next one back, and there are themed family trains through the autumn and at Christmas.
High ropes and zip wires in the trees of Witton Country Park, with a junior course from age 4 and a bigger one from 6. The park around it is free, so the ropes are the paid hour in a free day.
Zip wires and treetop crossings through the tallest pines in Delamere Forest. The entry-level course takes them from four if they are over a metre tall; the big course is a genuine test of nerve.
Go Ape's high ropes in Grizedale Forest, with a mid-level course for ages 6 and up, the classic Treetop Challenge from 10 and a 3km tandem zip trek across the valley for teenagers. Pair it with the forest trails for a full day.
Two courses strung through England's only genuine mountain forest, above Keswick. Height is the gate here, not age: one metre for Treetop Adventure, 1.2m and a sixth birthday for Plus, which finishes on a 130 metre zip wire.
Two floors of e-karting, AR bowling, VR arenas and street golf above Liverpool ONE. Built with teenagers and work nights out in mind, but the karts take junior drivers from 8, and the bowling and arcade fill the gap for younger ones.
Indoor skatepark, pump track, trampolines and bouldering wall in Salford, with scooter, BMX and helmet hire. Two-hour open sessions are £11 to £15 for 6 and over, and under-6s get coached Mini Shredders mornings.
Twenty-four themed climbing walls in Haslingden, harnesses on and an hour in the arena, from age 4. The Leap of Faith off the top platform costs extra and is the bit they will want to do twice.
A theme park deliberately built for ages 2 to 13 rather than teenagers, so both of them can ride most of it. The classic full-day option on your doorstep.
A working slate mine at the top of Honister Pass with guided tours deep into the mountain, and via ferrata routes up the crag for the brave. Tours take all ages; the climbing starts at ten.
Freefall in a glass wind tunnel, no plane required. Kids can fly from age 3, and a first-timer package buys two instructor-held flights of just under a minute each. Short, expensive and unforgettable, roughly in that order.
Treetop rope courses in the woods at Walton Hall Gardens. The Warrington site runs the Adventurer course, built for children from age 4 with a minimum height of 1.05m, with over 60 activities at different heights. Children £19; supervising adults walking below go free.
Kendal's big climbing centre, out on the business park, with Crazy Climb clip-and-climb walls from age 5, an optional Sky Jump finish and what it calls the UK's only indoor via ferrata for over-11s. The wet-day adrenaline option for South Lakes families.
A short, perfectly-formed steam line through the Leven valley that connects with the Windermere boats at Lakeside. Do train plus cruise and you have built the classic Lakes day without a single car park argument.
Two rides, a 4D cinema, build zones and Manchester's skyline done in miniature bricks. Squarely aimed at 3 to 10, and it knows it: adults can only visit with a child.
A mile and a half of outdoor obstacle trail through the woods by the mere, with more than 40 obstacles: balance beams, rope swings, zip wires and a great deal of mud. Wet, screen-free and completely absorbing, and open daily from April to October.

You do not have to be staying at the hotel to use it. The pull is the Vertigo high wire course, a 210 metre dual zip line and a free fall pillow you jump onto from three, six or ten metres.

Actor-led horror comedy through a thousand years of grim Lancashire history, with a drop ride at the end. Properly scary in places, so save it for the older ones.
More than a kilometre of muddy obstacles, rope swings, wobbly bridges and big slides through a Cheshire valley. Children come off it filthy, soaked and asking to go round again. This is the point; dress accordingly.
The nineties TV show rebuilt for real: around 75 minutes of physical, mental, skill and mystery games across four themed zones, ending in the crystal dome. Brilliant from about nine up, but it is strictly 9+ and the adults have to play too.
A big leisure centre under a grass roof on the A6 north of Preston: six bowling lanes, a covered crazy golf course, a curling rink, a three-screen cinema and a £6 VR ride. Each activity is priced separately, so it adds up.
A climbing centre in a Victorian church on Winwick Road since 1996, with fifty four lines, eight auto belays and a 100 square metre bouldering area. You are climbing too: under 12s need a registered adult alongside them.
Real snow all year round at the venue Manchester still calls Chill Factore. Over-fours get the Snow Park with sledging, Downhill Donuts and an ice slide at weekends and in the school holidays; older kids can learn to ski or board on the UK's longest indoor real snow slope.
Two indoor jungle-themed mini golf courses inside the Printworks, plus a bonus 19th hole that can win you a free round. The easiest wet-weather hour in the city centre, if not the cheapest.
Treetop nets, high ropes and forest tubing in the woods of Heaton Park, and it is outdoors, not indoors. The cheap one is Treetot Nets: an hour bouncing on nets in the trees for ages 1 to 5, from £5, with a grown-up joining in.

The short, wide pier at the South Shore end of Blackpool, open daily, with a family rides arena (carousel, teacups, dodgems, waltzer, a bouncy slide, Crazy Coasters) and an arcade. Rides run weather permitting.
Chester's city-centre racecourse, where under-18s go free on racedays in the general admission areas. The day to bring children is Family Fun Day, next on Sunday 1 August 2027, and before that there is a Halloween fireworks night on 31 October.
Electric drift karts built to spin, on an indoor track in a Bolton unit, with a small soft play and an arcade for whoever is waiting. Family-run since 2022 and open afternoons from Wednesday.

An indoor 450-metre karting track with a flyover on Wharfside Way, for drivers aged 8 and up. Watching from the bar is free, parking is free, and race prices only show when you book.
A multi-level electric kart track underneath the Manchester Arena car park, with a flyover and 15 corners. For 8-year-olds who fit the karts, and free for everyone else to watch.
Indoor electric karting at Walton Summit with two tracks: a main circuit over three floors and a starter track aimed at families and first-timers. Drivers must be 8, spectators watch free and parking is free.
The biggest purpose built indoor karting track in the country, a kilometre of circuit with 22 corners and a tunnel, behind Bank Quay station. Inside leg catches people out: drivers must be eight and measure 25 inches.
