A Victorian lift built to hoist canal boats fifty feet between the Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The lift itself is closed for repairs through 2026, with reopening planned for the 2027 season, but the free visitor centre, the play area and hour-long river cruises from its foot are all running.
About 250 acres of parkland and woods in the middle of the Wirral with a toddler play area, an adventure playground, pitch and putt and a cafe that opens at 8am. The all-rounder for a Saturday morning.

The park Central Park was copied from: two lakes, a covered Swiss Bridge, a playground with a climbing boulder and acres of flat grass, all free. The visitor centre has the cafe and the toilets.
The oldest standing building on Merseyside, a twelfth century monastery hemmed in by the Cammell Laird shipyard. Ruined cloisters, a chapter house, and a tower you can climb for a view over the yard.
Carlisle's big riverside park, right under the castle walls: a large play area for all ages, a free splash park in the warmer months, skate park and acres of grass where the Eden and Caldew meet. The obvious free half of a Carlisle day.
A proper old-fashioned free museum in the town centre: Egyptian gallery, natural history cases and paintings upstairs, all doable in an hour. Closed Sundays and Mondays, which catches people out.

Fifty odd acres of birch and oak wrapped round a fifteen acre lake, out between Congleton and Holmes Chapel. Give the children the permanent orienteering map and it stops being a walk.
The old national park visitor centre on the Windermere shore, now run by BeWILDerwood and still mid-makeover. The grounds are free to wander; Minty Land indoor play, Zip World's treetop courses, Wild Bounce and the lake cruises are the paid extras.

Stockport's big council park in Cheadle, with a fully accessible playground, a free BMX race track and an 18-hole pitch and putt at £6.50 for juniors. Free to visit, but the car park is pay and display.
Salford's largest and most popular park, a listed Victorian landscape off Eccles Old Road with a children's play area, tennis courts, a games area and room for picnics. Free, open round the clock to walkers, and the venue for the quieter Little Sparks fireworks on 31 October.
Riverside country park on the Irwell with a playground, old mill remains and its own East Lancashire Railway station, so a heritage steam train can be part of the day rather than the whole of it.
South Liverpool's favourite park: lake, playground, ancient trees and the Storybarn, The Reader's hands-on storytelling space in the old coach house. The neolithic Calder Stones are older than Stonehenge, which is a good fact to deploy.

Small, tidy and 300 metres from a tram stop, which makes Dunwood the one you can do without a car. Playground, three tennis courts, a bowling green and free parking if you do drive.
Old woodland on the Wirral bank of the Mersey with views across the estuary, an old bear pit (empty, long since) and a tea garden in the warmer months. A short, easy woodland walk with a strange bit of history in the middle.
The Ribble runs shallow over shingle on the town side of the bridge, which is why half of Clitheroe turns up on a warm Sunday. Picnic space, a miniature railway at weekends, free to use.
A big lake crowded with waterfowl, a flat path alongside it and a cafe where you left the car: the easiest small-child walk in the Stockport area. Entry is free, the car park is not.
A hilltop park with the best free view of the city, a modern playground and a mini roads track where children can learn to ride a bike without meeting a real car. It sits just up the hill from the city centre, and it is free.

A charity-run park under Hoad Hill in Ulverston with an inclusive playground, a woodland animal trail, a walled garden and orchard, and the path up to the Sir John Barrow Monument. Free, open daily and busy with family events.
Eight hectares of lowland dune heath behind Freshfield station, run by the Wildlife Trust. Red squirrels, lizards and dragonflies, grazing livestock, and no car park, no toilets and no cafe of any kind.

Jacobean hall on the edge of Padiham with free gardens, woodland walks and a natural play area. Children go into the hall free with an adult, adults pay £7, and parking is free. A cheap half day with a house thrown in.
Forestry England's big forest in the Forest of Bowland, with a Room on the Broom trail for 3 to 9s, a play area, four walking and four cycling trails and the Hungry Pine cafe. Entry is free. Parking is not cheap.
Sculptures hidden through the trees turn a forest walk into a treasure hunt, with trails from buggy-flat to proper leg-stretch and Go Ape overhead. Between Windermere and Coniston, and quieter than both.

War told through people's stories in a building designed to feel like a shattered globe. The hourly Big Picture Show projections fill the whole gallery and stop everyone mid-step. Heavy themes, handled well, and better for the top end of primary.

A neo-Gothic library from 1900 on Deansgate that looks like a cathedral built for books. Free, no booking, and a genuine wow for about 45 minutes. Open Wednesday to Saturday only.
A flat circular walk round a United Utilities reservoir in the Bradshaw valley north of Bolton, with a small cafe by the car park and enough water birds to hold a four year old. Genuinely pushchair friendly.
A free 12th-century ruin on a grassy hill above Kendal, open all the time, with walls to circle, arches to charge through and the whole town and fells spread out below. Ten minutes of steep pull to get up, then let them loose.
A working fruit farm with a farm shop, cafe and a free play area, plus pick your own from June to August. The strawberry tickets sell out fast and the fruit costs more than the supermarket, but nobody is here for the economics.
Seventeen acres of restored Victorian seafront gardens with the Venetian Bridge over Marine Lake, boat hire, and the Tree Top Towers playground. Free, flat and right on the Promenade, so it slots around anything else you are doing in Southport.
William Lever built it for his wife and filled it with what he liked: Pre-Raphaelite paintings, Napoleon memorabilia and one of the most significant collections of Wedgwood jasperware in the UK. Free, and the Chinese ceramics cases sit low so children can see in.
Lancashire's only surviving colliery headgear and a 3,300 horsepower steam winding engine at Astley Green, run by volunteers and free to walk round. Afternoons only, four days a week.
Fifty-odd acres of Leigh parkland with an inclusive playground, free disc golf through the woods and enough open grass to empty any child. Toilets open at weekends only, courtesy of the volunteers.
Lowland heath on the western edge of Wilmslow, an SSSI and Local Nature Reserve with Black Lake in the middle. A surfaced path takes a pushchair round, which is unusual for a heath. No cafe, no toilet, no play equipment.
The spiral atrium is one of the most spectacular free interiors in the North West, the children's floor is genuinely brilliant, and the rooftop terrace looks across the city. Rainy-day Liverpool's best-kept non-secret, next door to World Museum.
Trafford's largest municipal park, and the rare one that has thought about age gaps: a playground for little ones opposite the cafe, climbing nets and zip lines for eight to fourteens further up. Also a Pets Corner and disc golf.
Turn up at half three and you can watch the herd being milked through a gallery window in the cafe, drink in hand. It is a working dairy farm outside Kendal and the trail round it is free.
Lytham's oldest park, next to the Green: a children's play area, crazy golf, an aviary and a very good cafe, with the Lowther Pavilion theatre in the middle. Easy to fold into a Lytham seafront walk.
A 2km woodland loop round a Victorian dam on the edge of Lymm village: flat enough for a pushchair in dry weather, with a coffee van at the top and ducks all the way round. The classic short local walk, done properly.
78 acres of free parkland and woodland around a Georgian hall, with a cafe, seasonal trails and cheap pay-and-display parking. The hall tour is the only ticketed bit, and with kids in tow you can happily skip it.
The white windmill on Lytham Green is free to go inside, four floors of milling and local history run by volunteers. Twenty minutes well spent, and the green outside is the actual day.
Conifer forest and four reservoirs in the hills east of Macclesfield, with miles of forestry track between them. Herons nest at Trentabank and are visible from the path, so there is something to point at when the legs go.
Free, right in the city centre, and properly set up for children: the Lion's Den family gallery has its own play space and the family activity programme costs nothing. Closed Mondays.
The big library on St Peter's Square has a jungle-themed children's library, refurbished in 2021, with board books to older fiction, a nursing room and a cafe in the building. Free, and open until 8pm Monday to Thursday.

The name undersells it. Fleetwood's seafront gardens hold a large playground with inclusive equipment, a skate bowl, a model boating lake the yacht club races on, bowling greens and pitch and putt. The beach is across the road.
Manchester's first new city park in over 100 years, next to Piccadilly station, with a play yard of six slides built around the uncovered River Medlock. Free, open 5am to 9pm, with accessible toilets and baby change by the play area.
A Green Flag park in the middle of Fleetwood with children's play areas, a duck pond, woodland and a multi use games court that is genuinely free to use. Parkour bars too, though those are for over eights.
Ninety five per cent of the paths take a buggy or a wheelchair, which is rare for a nature reserve. Old sand quarry lakes outside Rufford, run by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, with six hides and a viewing platform.
Wigan's grand Victorian park after a £6.1m restoration: playground, bandstand, waterfall, formal gardens and an ornate iron pavilion with a Frederick's ice cream cafe inside. Free and right on the edge of the town centre.
Kirkby's main park on Mill Lane, with an adventure playground, a lake, wetland and woodland paths, a green gym and a cafe with toilets open daily 9am to 5pm. Free, and ten minutes' walk from Kirkby station.
Bolton's biggest play area sits inside a 750 acre country park at Farnworth, with three lakes, a bird hide and miles of waterside path behind it. Even the safety surfacing earns its keep, printed with the life cycle of a frog.

A Grade I listed Tudor manor house marooned among Salford's new-builds, free to walk round, with a proper Great Hall, gardens and school-holiday craft sessions. Closed Fridays and Saturdays, which catches people out.
The classic first family fell: a short climb from Windermere village to a proper summit with the whole lake and the high fells laid out below. A surfaced accessible path now runs all the way up, though it is still a real 120-metre climb, not a stroll.

The hall is back open after its £3.6m restoration, but the park was always the real family day: playgrounds, gardens, woodland trails and a cafe right by the play area. Park free, parking cheap, and kids get into the hall for nothing.

The grounds, lakeshore and cafe stay open and free, and arriving by boat from Ambleside is still a great small adventure.
A county council country park of woodland and farmland around the Bronte-linked hamlet of Wycoller, with footpaths along Wycoller Beck, toilets and a picnic area. Parking is £1 a day and cars stop at the car parks.
