No city in the North West does free like Liverpool. World Museum, the Museum of Liverpool and the Walker Art Gallery cost nothing and sit within a walk of each other (the Maritime Museum is shut for redevelopment, with no reopening date yet), and Central Library's spiral atrium next door is one of the region's most spectacular free interiors. The honest secret is the ferry: the 50-minute River Explorer loop is £14 an adult and £9 a child, and children rate the boat above any museum in the city.
Rain barely matters here - the museum quarter swallows a whole wet week, and Gravity Max covers the burn-energy-indoors days. In fairer weather, Sefton Park's Palm House and fairy glen, Calderstones with its Storybarn, and the enormous pigs at Croxteth Home Farm are where local families actually go. The Beatles Story and the Anfield tour are for when the grandparents visit; Otterspool Adventure by the promenade is the one Liverpool parents keep recommending to each other.
South Liverpool's favourite park: lake, playground, ancient trees and the Storybarn, The Reader's hands-on storytelling space in the old coach house. The neolithic Calder Stones are older than Stonehenge, which is a good fact to deploy.
Two minutes off junction 5 of the M62, and you cannot hear it once you are past the trees. A Green Flag park with a playground, sunken gardens, a community orchard and free parking on site.
A hilltop park with the best free view of the city, a modern playground and a mini roads track where children can learn to ride a bike without meeting a real car. It sits just up the hill from the city centre, and it is free.
A Green Flag park on the wedge of land left behind by three converging railway lines: playground, cafe, bird hide and the Trans Pennine Trail straight through. Halewood station is next door, so you can arrive by train.
The spiral atrium is one of the most spectacular free interiors in the North West, the children's floor is genuinely brilliant, and the rooftop terrace looks across the city. Rainy-day Liverpool's best-kept non-secret, next door to World Museum.
The city's story with an overhead railway carriage to climb aboard and Little Liverpool, a dedicated hands-on gallery for under-6s. Free, on the waterfront, and the window views are half the fun.
The long riverside promenade and the park behind it: flat wide paths for bikes and scooters, a free skatepark, play areas and ships going past on the Mersey. Free parking, and the paid Otterspool Adventure is right there if you want to spend money.
Liverpool's great Victorian park: 235 acres of lake, streams and playgrounds around a glass Palm House full of palms, statues and free family events. The fairy glen with its waterfalls is the bit children remember.
A Victorian merchant's house in Mossley Hill with Turners on the walls and, upstairs, a childhood room of old toys and a small world room. Free, quiet and an hour well spent on a grey afternoon.
The University of Liverpool's own gallery and museum, five minutes uphill from Lime Street, free and small enough to do properly in an hour. Open Tuesday to Saturday, going to six days a week from 5 October 2026.
Free, grand, and far better with small children than a fine-art gallery has any right to be, thanks to Big Art for Little Artists, a whole gallery where they are supposed to touch things.
Volunteer-led tours of a four storey underground chamber in Edge Hill, dug back out by the people showing you round. Free, booked by email, Wednesdays and Sundays only, and best for children old enough to listen for an hour and a half.
Five floors, free, and it covers three things small children reliably love: giant dinosaurs, an aquarium and a space gallery. The best wet-weather day within half an hour.
A rare-breeds conservation farm inside the 500-acre Croxteth estate, with a miniature railway, play areas and free country park all round it. The farm entry is cheap and the pigs are enormous.
A jungle-themed soft play and cafe at the ASDA in Hunts Cross. Walk-up only, adults go in free, and the cafe takes its coffee more seriously than most.
A proper old-school multi-level soft play above Belle Vale Shopping Centre, 19 years in and recently refurbished. Free parking, cheap adult entry, a separate toddler area and 1 hour 45 minute sessions.
Liverpool put its serious pool at Wavertree Sports Park: an eight lane 50m tank, and alongside it a 20m pool kept at 30 degrees, which is the one you actually want with small children. Under-8s swim free.
Knowsley's flagship leisure centre on Longview Drive in Huyton, with public swimming, parent and toddler sessions and lane swimming. The pool is open until 10pm Monday to Thursday and 9pm on Fridays, but only 9am to 1.45pm at weekends. Under-5s swim free.
The self-guided tour takes you through the home dressing room, down the tunnel past the This Is Anfield sign and out pitchside, with the club museum included. For a football-mad child it is a pilgrimage. For anyone else it is £77 for a family walk round a stadium.
Bright auto-belay climbing walls inside a converted church in Kirkdale. You pay only for the people climbing, and the auto-belays mean nobody needs to know ropes.
A three-floor indoor adventure park in Clayton Square Shopping Centre, and despite the name it has no trampolines: toddler soft play, a ninja playground, a ball pit, interactive football, laser quest, bumper cars and a roller rink, all on one ticket. Sessions are timed, book ahead.
Two floors of e-karting, AR bowling, VR arenas and street golf above Liverpool ONE. Built with teenagers and work nights out in mind, but the karts take junior drivers from 8, and the bowling and arcade fill the gap for younger ones.
A warehouse of hands-on pretend in Wavertree: a child-sized village with a diner and car wash, an art zone where they paint a real car, water play, and a slime pot to take home. The child ticket stings, but under-tens get a full session out of it.
A 40,000 sq ft trampoline and adventure park at Hunts Cross, run by AirHop. Toddler Takeover is the bargain; the 60-minute Open Jump is the cheapest way in for bigger kids, and parents watch for free.
A charity with a whole dock basin at Queens Dock to play with. Children from 8 can kayak, paddleboard or take out a swan pedalo in the middle of the city, and in the warmer months there is an inflatable aqua park as well.
The famous ferry across the Mersey run as a 50-minute sightseeing loop with commentary, and the honest truth is kids love the boat more than any museum. Hop off at Seacombe for Eureka! next door.
An adventure play park by the Mersey promenade - climbing frames, jumping pillows, go-karts and an indoor barn - that keeps coming up when Liverpool parents list what actually works. Walk it off on the prom afterwards.
Slime making, projection games and a small soft play zone in a Duke Street unit, sold as 90 minute sessions. Pricier than a soft play, and the one indoor option in town where the mess is the point.

The Hope Street theatre with the rock 'n' roll panto also runs Saturday music mornings for under-fives in its cafe from September to July. The picture-book shows happen at its sister theatre, the Playhouse, across town.
The Victorian theatre on Williamson Square is where the Everyman and Playhouse put their picture-book shows: Sir Charlie Stinky Socks at the end of October, then The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Pip and Posy and Zog in spring 2027. Hour-long shows, the right length for a first theatre trip.

The Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum next door are shut for essential maintenance ahead of a major redevelopment that National Museums Liverpool says is subject to funding, and no reopening date is published. The Albert Dock around them is still worth the walk, and the city's other national museums are free and open.
The TV show turned into 35,000 square feet of obstacles in Speke: warped wall, inflatable park and a Mini Ninjas soft play for the small ones. One-hour sessions, book ahead.
An indoor illusion attraction on Duke Street, all on one level: upside-down rooms, mirror mazes, puzzles and photo illusions. Families usually spend about an hour. Open daily 10am to 5pm with timed entry.
A 24-acre community farm in Walton with rare-breed pigs, Ryeland sheep, a pygmy goat, a donkey, a pony, rabbits, ducks and chickens. Open every day 10am to 3.30pm. Feed bags are £1 and the site lists no entry price.
Indoor electric karting on the dock road near the Brunswick end, with a separate 275m starter track that suits 8-year-olds on their first go. Spectators watch for free.

Tiny Tales is creative play, stories and songs for under 5s in the Everyman's Street Cafe, Thursdays at 11am until 17 December. £6 covers one adult and up to three children. Book through Teeny Tiny Theatre.
Liverpool's free light art trail along the waterfront, running right through October half term. Not fireworks, but a better fit for children who find bangs too much. Nightly times were not published when we checked, so look before you set off.

Free to get in and better than it sounds: hands-on stations on glass, lenses and fibre optics, a Victorian street and the old Tank House, with live glassblowing around midday and 2pm for a small extra charge. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
St Helens' biggest park. Play areas, open space and a walled garden, and it costs nothing.
A 20-metre white head rising out of a reclaimed colliery, with woodland trails around it. Genuinely strange and memorable for kids, and a short walk rather than a hike.
A green corridor of canal towpath and parkland running from St Helens down towards Warrington. Flat, traffic-free and ideal if the bikes or scooters are coming.
Funded holiday clubs with food included, ages 4 to 18, for families on benefits-related free school meals. Worth a look even if you assume you won't qualify.
A small play centre in the old Prescot Gospel Hall built for under-fives, with a role-play street, a soft play house with slides and a ball pool, and a baby corner. Weekday mornings only, closed Tuesdays, and adults go in free.
Drive through the reserve from the car, then the sea lion and birds of prey shows. Reviews are split on value, and several warn that families expect a full zoo and find fewer headline animals, so set expectations first.
Huge sand dunes, a proper beach and red squirrels in the pinewoods behind it. The dunes alone will occupy them for an hour. Free entry if you have National Trust membership.
