Farms & animals in the North West

Working farms, animal parks and safaris. Usually the bit they actually remember.

24 places4 free

The category children actually talk about afterwards, and the one most likely to justify a long drive.

Chester Zoo is the obvious anchor and earns it, though it is a full day and a great deal of walking; reviews put the sweet spot at five and up, and still suggest bringing the pushchair at four. Blackpool Zoo is smaller, cheaper and considerably easier with little legs. Knowsley Safari is a drive-through, which quietly solves both rain and a tired toddler at the same time. Smithills near Bolton and Windmill Farm at Burscough are proper working farms rather than attractions with a goat in the corner. A handful cost nothing at all: Wythenshawe's community farm, Tam O'Shanter on the Wirral, Kenyon Hall near Warrington, and the Ice Cream Farm at Tattenhall, where getting in is free and the ice cream is emphatically not.
