The category children actually talk about afterwards, and the one most likely to justify a long drive.
Chester Zoo is the obvious anchor and earns it, though it is a full day and a great deal of walking; reviews put the sweet spot at five and up, and still suggest bringing the pushchair at four. Blackpool Zoo is smaller, cheaper and considerably easier with little legs. Knowsley Safari is a drive-through, which quietly solves both rain and a tired toddler at the same time. Smithills near Bolton and Windmill Farm at Burscough are proper working farms rather than attractions with a goat in the corner. A handful cost nothing at all: Wythenshawe's community farm, Tam O'Shanter on the Wirral and Kenyon Hall near Warrington. The Ice Cream Farm at Tattenhall is close, a couple of pounds to get in, and the ice cream is emphatically not.
A free adventure playground in Blacon, going for over 50 years, with a zip wire, a fort and an 8ft slide, plus a small farm of donkeys, goats and sheep. No food on site, so take a picnic and wellies.
Free-entry hill farm on the A54 above Wildboarclough, with ice cream made from its own Peak District milk, a tea room and nature trails through meadow and woodland. Picnics are banned, which is how entry stays free.
A working fruit farm with a farm shop, cafe and a free play area, plus pick your own from June to August. The strawberry tickets sell out fast and the fruit costs more than the supermarket, but nobody is here for the economics.
Turn up at half three and you can watch the herd being milked through a gallery window in the cafe, drink in hand. It is a working dairy farm outside Kendal and the trail round it is free.
A free community farm under Bidston Hill: pigs, goats, alpacas and hens, a woodland on the doorstep, and a café doing proper bacon butties. One of Merseyside's best zero-cost mornings.
A big south Manchester park with a proper community farm - pigs, goats, horses - a Tudor hall, and enough playground to earn the trip on its own. All free.
A community farm in Kirkby doing the simple things properly: small animals to handle and horse rides at weekends and in the school holidays, two play areas, and entry at £4 an adult and £3 a child, which makes it an easy repeat visit rather than an annual event.
A working beef and sheep farm at Risley, run by two sisters, that opens for booked events: a 7-acre pumpkin patch with 40-odd varieties in October, Deck the Barn at Christmas and lambing in spring. Pumpkin entry is £15 a car.
Wild boar, deer and llamas in a Forest of Bowland valley, with animal feeding, an adventure play area, go-karts and river walks. Small, unslick and all the better for it.
A rare-breeds conservation farm inside the 500-acre Croxteth estate, with a miniature railway, play areas and free country park all round it. The farm entry is cheap and the pigs are enormous.
A proper hands-on farm park at the top of the Fylde coast: feeding, petting, pony and tractor rides, and enough indoor barns to survive the weather. Flat £10 a head from age 1, which is the only catch.
Eagles, owls and vultures flown close enough to feel the wingbeat, at a sanctuary that is about the birds rather than the gift shop. Displays run through the day; small, and better for it.
A farm shop and restaurant just off the A580 at Lowton that throws a proper Pumpkin Festival every October: a pumpkin field with wheelbarrows, live entertainment and a funfair. The rest of the year it is lunch and a look for the Highland cows.
A working farm ten minutes north of Chester where the pens are open, the feed bags cost a pound and the soft play is included in the ticket. No booking, which is half the appeal.
A small family-run zoo off the M6 at Twemlow, with meerkats, skunks, wallabies, owls and reptiles, keeper talks and handling sessions in the ticket. Kids £6, picnics allowed, but the nearest toilets are at the dairy cafe next door.
A small, old-fashioned petting farm opposite Mills Hill station in Chadderton: hold the rabbits, feed the donkeys and alpacas, bath a tortoise. £8.50 a head, no booking on normal days, and bring cash because there is no card machine.
A pick-your-own farm on the Cheshire, Wrexham and Shropshire border that opens for pumpkins in October and for a booked Father Christmas tractor trip in December. October is the bargain: £2 a head for the maize mazes, photo village and patch.
The teaching zoo at Reaseheath College, with meerkats, otters, lemurs, a porcupine, wallabies and warm indoor reptile and fish rooms. Open to the public only at weekends and in college holidays, which is exactly when you need it, and £7 a child.
A proper small farm park tucked into the Tame valley on Stockport's edge: cows, goats, shire horses and alpacas, zip wires outside and a play area under cover for when it rains. Book online, the gate price is higher.
A big Dee estuary reserve with a den-building area, hides you can actually get a pushchair into and free parking. The first child goes free and under-5s always do.
A charity farm by the River Goyt in Marple where alpacas, pigs and Shetland ponies roam the riverside walk. £3.50 each for ages 3 and up, with playgrounds and a café, and closed every Monday.
A small entry fee, then £4.50 a go for most attractions: sand and water play, mini golf, bouncy pillows, a racing track and soft play, all funded by what the farm calls the world's biggest ice cream shop. Cheap to get in, easy to spend in.
A volunteer-run sanctuary near Lostock Hall with over 90 birds of prey in woodland aviaries and a flying display every day that visitors join in. Pay on the door. Winter hours are short: 11am to 2pm.
An adventure farm off Stretton Road built for 4 to 12s: tractor trailer rides, zip wires, drop slides, jumping pillows, roller skating and a tent full of inflatables. Despite the name there are no animals to see, and in October it turns into Spooky World's daytime Fun-By-Day.
Not an open farm but a booked session with a herd of 40 to 60 alpacas and llamas in Bardsea, on the coast just south of Ulverston. Walk one round the grounds, or just hand-feed the herd as it crowds round you.
Elephants, gorillas, giraffes and sea lions in 37 acres that are actually walkable with primary-age legs - big enough to feel like a full day, small enough that nobody ends up carried.
Excellent, but it is a lot of walking. Reviews rate 5 to 10 as the ideal age and still recommend a pushchair at four. Climbing frames, water play and sand pits break up the distance.
A big family-run farm park on the Ashton and Oldham border: feed the cows, alpacas and goats, hold the rabbits, then lose an hour on the jumping pillow. Card only, and from October most days are ticketed events.
The only shire horse stud in the country open to the public, with up to thirty of them in season. The ticket turns into a free return pass for a month, which changes the maths completely.

A small zoo five minutes off M6 junction 35 with over 100 species and, crucially, a lot of it under glass: tropical hall, butterfly house, aquarium and small mammals inside, dik-diks and hornbills out. Compact enough that little legs see everything, open every day from 10am.
A lived-in castle above the Esk with a Hawk and Owl Centre whose flying displays are the real event, gardens to roam and a healthy line in ghost stories for the brave. Far, but it earns the drive.
A small community interest farm on the edge of Prenton where the main event is a ninety minute alpaca and goat walk: feeding, a lead rope round a woodland trail, then a log fire and a cup of tea in a cabin.
A private hour with a herd of more than 60 female alpacas on a farm off High Lane: a short walk, hand feeding, cuddling and a lot of alpaca facts. Capped at eight people. Book the Experience, because the Trek is over 16s only.
A hands-on farm above Bolton: pets corner, meet-and-greet sessions, tractor and trailer rides, donkey rides and a zoo zone, with activities timetabled through the day. Open every day of the year bar three, and £45 for a family of four.
A working family farm under a mile from Keswick town centre, where a tractor trailer takes you out to feed Highland cows and meet the pigs, goats and Herdwicks. Weekend tours only and they must be booked.
Cumbria's big family farm park: animal handling, giant jumping pillows, pedal go-karts and an indoor play barn big enough to lose a wet afternoon in. The far-north option when you are up that way.

A family farm opposite Bents in Glazebury that opens its fields three times a year: tulips in spring, pick-your-own strawberries in early summer and a 22-acre pumpkin patch in October. Out of season it is a milk and egg vending hut, which is still worth knowing about.
An open farm, a separate playbarn, a farm shop and a cafe at Tewitfield, just north of Carnforth. Over 50 breeds and species, a reptile room, and a straw-filled barn with a zip line included in the farm ticket.
A working dairy farm on the Blackburn edge of the Ribble Valley that makes ice cream from its own herd and opens to visitors at weekends and in the holidays. Talks, animal feeds, a milking parlour and an indoor natural play barn.
A 24-acre community farm in Walton with rare-breed pigs, Ryeland sheep, a pygmy goat, a donkey, a pony, rabbits, ducks and chickens. Open every day 10am to 3.30pm. Feed bags are £1 and the site lists no entry price.
A working farm on Martin Lane out in the Burscough mossland, with a flat circular walk past the lake, the hens, the goats, the alpacas and two donkeys called Walter and Tommy. The tea room is a restored barn.
The small zoo inside Ribby Hall Village, open to anyone and not just people staying there. Meerkats, otters, wallabies, porcupines and an exotic house, done in an easy couple of hours.
Alpaca walks and hands-on animal sessions at Thelwall, ten minutes from town, with donkeys, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens alongside the main event. Small, booked sessions rather than a turn-up farm park.
