Hard to justify on North West coverage alone. Only two of our places are English Heritage, and Carlisle is a long drive from most of the region. This one earns its keep if you also holiday in England and will use it away from home.

A working border fortress for 900 years, not a fairytale castle: a squat red keep full of prisoners' carvings, ramparts to walk and a military museum inside the walls. English Heritage, so members go free and everyone else should book online for the discount.
A ruined castle on a crag with views from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains, a reconstructed Bronze Age roundhouse and woodland paths below the walls. Castles do not need roofs to work for this age group.

The single-adult family membership at £84 is much better value than the two-adult one at £149 if you tend to do days out one parent at a time.
We are not going to pretend to know. It turns entirely on how often you would really go, and the honest answer for most families is fewer times than they imagine in the shop. Count the trips you genuinely made last year, not the ones you meant to.
Worth saying plainly: more than half the days out on this site cost nothing at all, and no annual pass beats free. Have a look at those first.
