Pleasureland is now Adventure Coast: entry is free and rides start at £2 pay as you go, loaded on a card, so a cautious four-year-old no longer costs the same as a ride-everything ten-year-old. Agree the top-up amount before the gate and let them ration their own rides. It runs weekends and school holidays and winds down in early September, so check dates before making the drive.
The rest of the town is gentler and cheaper. The Botanic Gardens in Churchtown are free and quietly right for smaller children - an aviary, a lake, a fernery and a good playground in Southport's prettiest corner - and the Model Railway Village near the Marine Lake is the small, odd attraction they remember longer than the rides. A volunteer-run narrow-gauge steam railway at Hesketh Bank where a family ticket is £15 and you ride as many times as you like. The line is only about 400 metres long, which is about right for a three-year-old.

The Atkinson's own panto on Lord Street, Cinderella this year, with magic, romance and wicked sisters. A family ticket for four is £98 to £110, plus £1.50 a ticket in booking fees, and there is a relaxed performance on Saturday 12 December at 1pm. A £10 panto pack of sweets, a drink and a light-up toy can be pre-ordered, which saves an argument at the kiosk.
A short ride on a Santa Special steam train to Toyland to meet Father Christmas, with a present for each child and mulled wine or fruit punch and a mince pie for the adults. The short ride is the right length for under 5s. Booking is essential and opens on 1 October.

St Helens' biggest park. Play areas, open space and a walled garden, and it costs nothing.
A 20-metre white head rising out of a reclaimed colliery, with woodland trails around it. Genuinely strange and memorable for kids, and a short walk rather than a hike.
A green corridor of canal towpath and parkland running from St Helens down towards Warrington. Flat, traffic-free and ideal if the bikes or scooters are coming.
Funded holiday clubs with food included, ages 4 to 18, for families on benefits-related free school meals. Worth a look even if you assume you won't qualify.
A small play centre in the old Prescot Gospel Hall built for under-fives, with a role-play street, a soft play house with slides and a ball pool, and a baby corner. Weekday mornings only, closed Tuesdays, and adults go in free.
Drive through the reserve from the car, then the sea lion and birds of prey shows. Reviews are split on value, and several warn that families expect a full zoo and find fewer headline animals, so set expectations first.
