Cumbria's big family farm park: animal handling, giant jumping pillows, pedal go-karts and an indoor play barn big enough to lose a wet afternoon in. The far-north option when you are up that way.
Bitts Park
Carlisle, Cumbria
Bitts Park is where Carlisle families default to, and rightly so. It fills the flat ground between Carlisle Castle and the River Eden, with the Caldew along its western edge, so you get castle walls on one side and riverbank on the other. The play area covers everything from toddler swings to climbing kit for bigger kids, with a skate park and outdoor gym alongside.
The star in summer is the free splash park inside the play area, running roughly Easter to October when the temperature behaves. Add the public toilets, a cafe and plenty of picnic grass and you can lose most of a day without spending anything beyond parking. The Queen Victoria monument in the middle is handy as a meeting point and a laps-of-honour circuit.
From Warrington it is a two-hour drive, so treat it as the free half of a proper Carlisle day: castle and Tullie House museum in the morning, park all afternoon. Hadrian's Wall path runs along the riverside boundary, for anyone who wants to say they have walked it.
Know before you go
- The splash park runs roughly Easter to October, 11am to 6pm, and is switched off in cold snaps, so pack towels and a dry change but have a plan B.
- Limited free parking sits opposite the Sheepmount stadium entrance; otherwise use the pay and display off Dacre Road or Devonshire Walk.
