The building is the exhibit as much as anything in it: the Castlecroft Goods Warehouse of 1848, restored and filled with the North West's transport past. Cars, trucks, buses and trains share the floor with hands-on exhibits and period costumes to try on, and the stories do the work: a horse-drawn tram that was once a chip shop, and Hilda the steam roller, who very nearly did not survive.
It sits just across the road from Bolton Street station, so it slots naturally into an East Lancashire Railway day rather than carrying one on its own; an hour or so does it. It opens 10am to 4pm whenever the railway is running public trains. Entry is £5 for adults and £3 for children, or free with a Day Rover, and there are drop-in craft workshops in the school holidays. Dogs are not allowed in, apart from assistance dogs.

Heritage steam and diesel trains on a 12 mile line from Heywood through Bury and Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall. A Day Rover lets you hop off at any of the seven stations and catch the next one back, and there are themed family trains through the autumn and at Christmas.
