Senhouse Roman Museum
Clifftop museum beside Maryport's Roman fort, holding Britain's largest group of Roman military altar stones. Wednesday finds handling and fort tours on Thursdays and Sundays make it work for children. Free parking.

Maryport's aquarium sits on South Quay looking over the harbour and out across the Solway, and it has been there since 1997. Inside are more than 75 displays with a strong lean towards local species, plus SeaLab, home to the seahorses and a lobster hatchery. Aquarists give fish feeding talks through the day and take questions at the end. Tickets last all day, so you can walk the harbour and come back in.
The extras are what turn it into a day. A 14-hole crazy golf course with jumps, rollercoasters and pinball tables winds round the outside of the building, free with an aquarium ticket, and behind it is a new pirate-ship adventure playground that costs nothing at all, open 9am to 5pm and closing when it gets dark in winter. The Splash Zone only runs in spring and summer, so bank that one for next year.
Tickets are £8.25 for children aged 3 to 16 and £14.75 for adults, or £42 for two adults and two children, and under 3s are free. Exhibits are open 10am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and the cafe opens at 9am with a view over the harbour. Parking is free if you pull into the play area or along the aquarium wall.
What it costs: Child (3 to 16) £8.25, adult £14.75, family of 2 adults and 2 children £42, under 3s free, one carer free with a disabled visitor. Tickets are valid all day. Crazy golf on its own is £4.50 adults, £3.50 children.
