Lytham Hall
78 acres of free parkland and woodland around a Georgian hall, with a cafe, seasonal trails and cheap pay-and-display parking. The hall tour is the only ticketed bit, and with kids in tow you can happily skip it.
Park View 4U
Lytham St Annes, Lancashire
Park View 4U is what happens when a Lytham charity spends more than twenty years turning a boggy field into a playground. The Queen Elizabeth II Park View Playing Fields now have a toddler park for 0 to 6s, a sand and water play area, a mud kitchen in the woods, a skate park, a BMX dirt track, a multi-use games area, a woodland sculpture trail and a stone amphitheatre. Every bit of it is free.
It suits a wide spread of ages, which is its real strength: toddlers on the sand and water, primary age children on the trail and the skate park, older ones on the BMX track. Google now lists the Quirky Tea Rooms on the site as permanently closed, so bring your own drinks and snacks.
The fields are council-owned and protected by Fields in Trust, and the play areas are maintained by the charity, so a donation is fair if you use it often.
What it costs: All the play facilities are free to use. The charity asks for donations towards upkeep.
Know before you go
- Bring a change of clothes for anyone under six. Between the sand and water play and the mud kitchen, someone will need one.
- The BMX track, teen zone and fitness kit are for 12 and over, so younger siblings stay on the toddler side.
- Google lists the Quirky Tea Rooms on site as permanently closed, so bring a flask and snacks.

St Annes' restored Victorian gardens a street back from the seafront: rose beds, a galleon climbing frame in the play area and the Pavilion tea room. The calm half of a beach day.
Fairhaven Lake and Gardens
A saltwater lake with rowing boats, a playground, crazy golf and a skate park, sat between Lytham and St Annes with the estuary on the other side of the sea wall. Free to walk in, and everything fun on it costs.

Lytham Windmill
The white windmill on Lytham Green is free to go inside, four floors of milling and local history run by volunteers. Twenty minutes well spent, and the green outside is the actual day.
Harry's Play Centre
A community soft play inside the St Annes YMCA, with separate areas for different ages. Cheap, walk-in, adults free, and a cafe that brings food to your table.
