A big lake with easy flat paths, bird hides and a decent play area. Free, close, and a good one for scooters and a picnic.
Pennington Hall Park
Leigh, Greater Manchester
Pennington Hall Park opened on 28 August 1920, handed to Leigh Corporation by the local brewers, and it still has the layout of a park built to be walked through in a good coat. Wigan Council lists play areas, tennis courts, bowling greens and a band stand, wrapped in flower gardens, with a pavilion being brought back into use as a community meeting space. The four tennis courts were refurbished in 2024 and now book through the LTA system instead of first come first served.
The cafe, Caffeina, is run by Community Spaces CIC and does hot drinks and food inside the park itself, which saves the usual march back to the car for a lukewarm flask. The same organisation runs Grow Your Mind, a wellbeing garden on the site. Good bones, small scale. An hour on the play area, a wander round the gardens, a drink, done. Then drive ten minutes to Pennington Flash if the children still have legs.
Know before you go
- Wigan Council's own instruction is to use the car park off Pennington Avenue and not to try your luck on St Helens Road. Follow it.
- The Proms event in September is the one weekend the park is genuinely rammed. Lovely if that is what you came for, miserable if you wanted a quiet swing. Pennington Flash is fifteen minutes away for the birds and the bigger walk, and the two together make a decent Leigh day without spending anything.
