The Singing Ringing Tree
A wind-powered steel sculpture on the moor above Burnley that hums when the weather blows, with a view worth the short climb. It is a half-hour stop, not a day out, so pair it with a walk or Towneley Hall.
Queen Street Mill Textile Museum

Queen Street Mill is a working museum on the edge of Burnley, and the scale of it is what gets you: the weaving shed still contains 308 Lancashire looms, and the mill's steam engine, Peace, is on show, though she is not run all the time now. Staff demonstrate how cotton turns into cloth on the heritage looms, which gives children machinery actually moving rather than a case of labels.
Adults pay £5 and under 18s are free. The 2026 season runs from 16 March to 31 October, Wednesday to Saturday, 12 to 4, so aim for a half term Wednesday or a Saturday afternoon; it is shut on Sundays. Parking is free and the whole site is wheelchair accessible.
There is a cafe until 3.45, baby change, accessible toilets and a gift shop, and the museum suggests allowing at least an hour and a half. It is a good one for the eight-to-twelve end who have done the Victorians at school and have questions. Towneley Park is a short drive back across Burnley if the younger ones need to run it off afterwards.

Know before you go
- It is three miles out of Burnley centre at Harle Syke and only opens Wednesday to Saturday afternoons. Closed Sunday to Tuesday and on bank holidays, which catches people out.
- The cafe stops serving food at 3.30 and closes at 3.45, so eat first if you are arriving late.
