Rivacre Valley Local Nature Reserve
Ellesmere Port, Cheshire
Rivacre Valley is 184 acres of woodland, meadow and brook wedged between Ellesmere Port and Little Sutton. The location is the surprising part. The car park is on Rivacre Road, barely a minute off junction 7 of the M53, and the traffic noise disappears within about two hundred metres of walking.
Cheshire West manage it as a local nature reserve, which means the emphasis is on habitat over facilities. There is a decent network of paths, meadows you can sit in with a picnic, a permanent orienteering course and a rangers' office running events through the year. Kingfishers hunt eels along Rivacre Brook, and spring is the best of it: celandines and wood anemones through the woods first, then bluebells.
Anyone who reads country park as playground and cafe will be disappointed. The council's own page lists paths, picnicking and orienteering and nothing else, and it flags steep sections and anti-motorcycle gates that larger wheelchairs will struggle with. Take a flask, plan an hour, and treat the orienteering course as the excuse the children need.
Know before you go
- The orienteering course is the thing that turns a walk into an activity for a seven year old. Ask at the rangers' office, because you cannot assume you will pick a map up from a post.
- The council flag steep paths and narrow anti-motorcycle gates. A three-wheeler will be fine. A wide double buggy will not.
- There is no cafe and no toilet block listed, so take a flask and go prepared.
Worth knowing: Some paths are steep and the anti-motorcycle gates are tight for larger wheelchairs and double buggies.
Seasonal: Bluebells in spring, meadows in high summer. Check before travelling.

Ellesmere Port's biggest leisure centre: two pools, a cafe, parking on site, and a day that runs from half six in the morning until ten at night on weekdays. Under-threes swim for £2.
