Illustration of Tenpin Blackburn

Tenpin Blackburn is a big, straightforward bowling alley on Peel Leisure and Retail Park, just off the town centre. There are 24 lanes, so walk-ins usually work outside peak times, and the lanes come with bumpers and lighter balls for younger bowlers. Around them sit arcade machines, air hockey, pool tables and table tennis, and a bar that shows the football.

A game is from £9.95 a head booked online. Tuesdays knock 50% off, and Friday nights after 6pm take 20% off up to three games. Up to six can bowl on one lane, and the venue reckons on 10 minutes per player per game. You can order food from the app and have it brought to the lane, and there is a halal menu.

It opens at 10am on weekdays and 9am at weekends, in term and in the holidays, and runs to midnight. Evenings get louder and more grown-up, so daytime is the family slot. Walk-ins are fine on a quiet weekday, but book ahead for weekends and holidays. Birthday parties are two hours of bowling with pizza on the lanes and unlimited squash, at £13.99 a head.

What it costs: From £9.95 a game when booked online. Tenpin Tuesday: 50% off bowling. Friday Frenzy: 20% off after 6pm. Kids' bowling parties £13.99 a head.

Know before you go

  • Tuesdays are 50% off bowling, which makes it the cheapest night by a distance.
  • Up to six people can share one lane, and a game takes roughly 10 minutes per player, so a family of four is about 40 minutes a game.

Darwen's independent play centre with a sensory room, open five days a week in term time and every day in the holidays. Somewhere to sit that is not a plastic bench.
