Illustration of Wyre Estuary Country Park

A green flag country park on the bank of the Wyre, with the estuary doing the scenery and the council doing the toilets. Free to get in, free to park, and there is a visitor centre and a cafe at the middle of it, which is a better combination than most days out manage.

The two play areas are natural-play rather than primary-coloured steel, split between toddlers and older children, and they are the anchor. Around them are the riverside paths, a 5km loop for anyone counting, birds on the mudflats and ranger events through the holidays.

It suits the day when you want to be outside and spend nothing, or the hour after something else. Cleveleys and Fleetwood are both minutes away, so it slots either side of a beach afternoon without any extra driving.

What it costs: Free entry and free parking. The cafe is the only spend.

Know before you go

  • The cafe opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 4.30pm, so a Monday or Tuesday visit means bringing your own flask.
  • There are two play areas, one pitched at toddlers and one at bigger children. Park at the visitor centre and they are both within a couple of minutes.

A proper hands-on farm park at the top of the Fylde coast: feeding, petting, pony and tractor rides, and enough indoor barns to survive the weather. Flat £10 a head from age 1, which is the only catch.

Fleetwood's maritime museum on Queen's Terrace: the town's fishing story told for £4, with accompanied children free and Lancashire crumpets in the coffee house. Small and seasonal, so treat it as the indoor hour of a Fleetwood day, not the day itself.

The name undersells it. Fleetwood's seafront gardens hold a large playground with inclusive equipment, a skate bowl, a model boating lake the yacht club races on, bowling greens and pitch and putt. The beach is across the road.
