Stockport Air Raid Shelters
A labyrinth of tunnels carved under the town centre that sheltered thousands in the Blitz, explored with a self-guided audio tour. Atmospheric in the best way for 7-and-ups.

Bruntwood Park is Stockport Council's showpiece park on Bruntwood Lane in Cheadle, and the council calls its playground a play area of excellence for the borough. That is a big claim to make in writing. The playground is the centre of the park, fully accessible, with equipment chosen and landscaped for adventure. There is a refreshment kiosk, and the old Victorian conservatory is now a restaurant.
Older children get two more things to do. The BMX race track, which the council calls world class, is free to anyone wearing the right protective kit, so bring helmets and pads. The 18-hole par 3 pitch and putt is run by Cheadle Golf Club: £6.50 for under-16s, £9.50 for adults or £25 for a family, with an iron, a putter and the round included. No booking, just turn up.
The pitch and putt is seasonal. In October 2026 it is shut Monday to Thursday until half term, then open daily from 23 October to 1 November, 10am to 5pm, and closed from 2 November until spring. The park itself is free and open all year, and the only cost is the pay and display car park. Buses 309 and 310 from Stockport stop nearby.
What it costs: Park, playground and BMX track are free. Pitch and putt (run by Cheadle Golf Club) 2026: adults £9.50, under-16s £6.50, family £25 (2 adults and 2 juniors, or 1 adult and 3), clubs included; closed 2 November to 31 March. Car park is pay and display.

A proper deer park on the edge of the Peaks: 1,400 acres, a herd of red deer, the Crow Wood adventure playground, and the house from the BBC's Pride and Prejudice.

A proper small farm park tucked into the Tame valley on Stockport's edge: cows, goats, shire horses and alpacas, zip wires outside and a play area under cover for when it rains. Book online, the gate price is higher.

A big lake crowded with waterfowl, a flat path alongside it and a cafe where you left the car: the easiest small-child walk in the Stockport area. Entry is free, the car park is not.

A black and white Tudor manor house sitting in around 60 acres of parkland with woods, brooks and lakes. The park costs nothing, under 16s go into the hall free, and all-day parking is £4.

The UK's only museum of hats and hatting, back open after a four-year refurbishment. The galleries are free and you can try hats on; the Victorian factory floor is an £8.50 guided tour on selected dates. An hour well spent, not a full day.
