Reddish Vale Farm
Stockport, Greater Manchester
A working farm park in the Tame valley, five minutes off the M60 but green enough that it does not feel it. The animals are the real thing: cows, sheep, goats, shire horses and alpacas, close enough to fuss over. Around them sits an outdoor adventure playground with zip wires, indoor play for wet days, and a cafe.
It runs from February to November and the opening days change with the seasons, so check before you go. Book online, it is cheaper than the gate, though walk-ins are taken when there is space. Parking is free, under 2s are free, and small extras like animal feed and the tractor ride cost a pound or two on top.
It pitches itself squarely at the under-tens, and it is honest about it: adults are not admitted without a child in tow. A three-year-old will get as much out of it as anyone.
Know before you go
- Days and hours shift with the seasons and it shuts over midwinter - check the website before setting off. Last entry is usually an hour before closing.
- No dogs, and adults cannot get in without a child. This is a place with its priorities straight.

The UK's only museum of hats and hatting, back open after a four-year refurbishment. The galleries are free and you can try hats on; the Victorian factory floor is a £7.50 guided tour. An hour well spent, not a full day.
