Croxteth Home Farm keeps more than 20 rare and at-risk breeds, from Irish Moiled cattle to Middle White, Saddleback and Gloucester Old Spot pigs, with small animal handling every day at no extra cost. Around it sit five hundred acres of free country park, a miniature railway and the Grade II* listed hall, which opens for tours and events rather than as a daily attraction. The Victorian walled garden is not currently open to the public.
Farm entry is cheap enough to be a habit rather than an event. It opens every day from 10am to 5pm, last entry 4pm, and there is no need to book. The park has accessible, junior and infant play areas, and the free car park off Muirhead Avenue East locks at 5.30pm from October to February, so do not linger.
What it costs: Farm admission is £5 a person on the farm's homepage, though another section of the same site says £6, so check before you go. Children under 1 free. Small animal handling included. No booking needed for a general visit. The country park and its car park are free.

A Tudor hall with woodland walks, a maze and a natural play area in the grounds. Free if you have National Trust membership, and the indoor house is a good rain fallback.
Museum of Liverpool
The city's story with an overhead railway carriage to climb aboard and Little Liverpool, a dedicated hands-on gallery for under-6s. Free, on the waterfront, and the window views are half the fun.
Merseyside Maritime Museum
Closed. The Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum next door are shut for essential maintenance ahead of a major redevelopment that National Museums Liverpool says is subject to funding, and no reopening date is published. The Albert Dock around them is still worth the walk, and the city's other national museums are free and open.
Mersey Ferries River Explorer
The famous ferry across the Mersey run as a 50-minute sightseeing loop with commentary, and the honest truth is kids love the boat more than any museum. Hop off at Seacombe for Eureka! next door.
Calderstones Park
South Liverpool's favourite park: lake, playground, ancient trees and the Storybarn, The Reader's hands-on storytelling space in the old coach house. The neolithic Calder Stones are older than Stonehenge, which is a good fact to deploy.
