Deansgate Lane Fields, Formby

Deansgate Lane is a block of playing fields on the Freshfield side of Formby, and Sefton's park finder describes it in one line: predominantly sports pitches, with a woodland sculpture trail. That trail is what makes it worth an entry at all, a set of carvings among the trees at the edge of the pitches that gives a short walk a point.

Set expectations before you go. This is a sports site with a wooded fringe, not a destination park, and Sefton list no car park, no toilets and no play equipment. It works as a half hour on a dry afternoon or as a stop between Freshfield station and the village. For anything longer, Duke Street Park is a mile away and has the play area, the courts and the greens.

Sefton's own listing files this under sport, and the sculpture trail is the only thing on it aimed at children. Do not promise a playground; Smithy Green on Moss Side has one of those, and Duke Street Park has the big one.
