Working steam engines, the story of Cottonopolis, and hands-on galleries in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station. Free, and the live demonstrations are the bit kids actually remember.
Depot Climbing Manchester

Bouldering is climbing without ropes over thick crash matting, and Depot's Trafford Park gym is one of the region's big ones. The kids' ladder runs from Depot Play for ages 1 to 5, through Wild Climbers at 4 to 6, to Kids Club for 7 to 14, all coached at one instructor to every six children, with holiday clubs in the school breaks.
Kids' sessions are £11 for an hour including shoe hire; casual entry is £8 for under-18s, free under 5 and £12.50 to £13.50 for adults. A parent or guardian has to register and sign a waiver before anyone climbs, so do that online first. All the instructors are DBS-checked. There is a cafe for the waiting, and parking close by.
For a child who climbs the door frames anyway, this is the legitimate outlet. The NICAS accreditation scheme, from age 7, gives the properly hooked ones a ladder of badges to chase.
Know before you go
- Register and sign the under-18 waiver online before you arrive, not in the doorway.
- School holidays bring a three-and-a-half-hour holiday club with lunch and shoe hire included.
Worth knowing: Under-18s need a guardian-signed waiver before climbing.

Wythenshawe Park & Community Farm
A big south Manchester park with a proper community farm - pigs, goats, horses - a Tudor hall, and enough playground to earn the trip on its own. All free.
