WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre
Otters at feeding time, flamingos, pond dipping and a canoe safari through the reeds in season. One of those places that quietly turns a nature-indifferent child into a nature child.

Fun Arena is on Dakota Business Park in Burscough, part of the old Burscough Aerodrome, HMS Ringtail, which explains the pilot theme. The main event is the Captain's Castle, 10,000 square feet of inflatable with 18ft super slides, mazes and an 80m obstacle course, for children over 3ft. Beyond it is the Sky Fort, a three-storey climbing frame with racing slides, a spider tower and a mini football pitch.
Little ones are well looked after. There is a toddler castle for children under 3ft with a helter-skelter, ball pit slides and a rocket, a baby soft play area, and a Little Racers zone for five and under. Weekday mornings until 1.30pm are toddlers only, as is 9am to 10am at weekends, so a school-age sibling has to wait for the afternoon.
It is not cheap. An hour of full access is £13.95 a child and £21.95 for two, Toddler Land is £11.95 for a toddler and one adult, and every watching adult needs a £1.50 viewer ticket. Booking online is essential. You cannot bring your own food, but the Hangar Restaurant serves from opening, and there are more than 300 seats for parents.
What it costs: One hour: full access (5 and over, or over 3ft) £13.95, Toddler Land (0 to 5, with one adult) £11.95, baby soft play (3 to 18 months, with one adult) £8.95, viewers £1.50. Two hours: £21.95, £16.95, £14.95 and £2. Viewer tickets are compulsory for capacity. Groups of eight or more get 15% off. Babies in arms are free.

A friendly hands-on farm whose star turn is the miniature railway running out across the fields. Animal handling sessions, indoor play for wet spells, and it never feels too big.

A working farm on Martin Lane out in the Burscough mossland, with a flat circular walk past the lake, the hens, the goats, the alpacas and two donkeys called Walter and Tommy. The tea room is a restored barn.
