A friendly working farm whose star attraction is the farm train, which runs out to Lake View Station from 11am and every half hour until 4pm. It is a real journey, not a loop of the car park. Small-animal handling in Farmyard Friends and Cuddly Critters, pedal tractors and an indoor soft play complete the set.
It is small enough that nothing is a trek and young children never hit the wall. It opens every day from 10 to 5, and this autumn there is an indoor Great Pumpkin Adventure. The railway alone justifies the trip for the train-inclined.
The farm train takes you out to Santa's newly designed grotto, with the fallow deer herd to spot as you pull into Lake View Station, and each child chooses an age-appropriate gift. The ticket covers the whole farm for the day, and adults get a hot drink and homemade cake, which is the part adults remember.

A working farm on Martin Lane out in the Burscough mossland, with a flat circular walk past the lake, the hens, the goats, the alpacas and two donkeys called Walter and Tommy. The tea room is a restored barn.
A big indoor inflatable arena on the old Burscough Aerodrome, with a 10,000 sq ft castle, a three-storey climbing frame and a separate toddler castle. Book ahead, and note that weekday mornings in term time are toddlers only.
