Beatrix Potter's tiny farmhouse, kept exactly as she left it, with the garden where Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck were dreamt up. Magical for a book-loving seven-year-old, over in an hour, and you must book a timed slot in advance.
Grizedale Forest
Hawkshead & Grizedale, Cumbria
Sculptures hide among the trees here - a giant hand, wooden figures, sound installations - turning an ordinary forest walk into a treasure hunt with no extra effort from you.
Trails run from buggy-flat to leg-stretch; the map at the centre grades them honestly. Quieter than the Windermere shore even in August, which is its own recommendation.
