This is the 17th-century farmhouse Beatrix Potter bought with her Peter Rabbit royalties in 1905, and the National Trust keeps it exactly as she left it, down to her boots by the door. Children who know the books get the strange thrill of standing inside the illustrations: the garden really is where Tom Kitten played, and the rhubarb patch where Jemima Puddle-Duck laid her egg is still growing rhubarb.
Be honest with yourself before booking. The house is tiny, the rooms are dim, everything is precious and nothing can be touched, so a toddler will mostly be carried and shushed. The whole visit, house and garden, is about an hour. This year it stays open until 13 December: closed on Fridays until 25 October, then daily from 10am to 4pm, with the house dressed for a storybook Christmas from 7 November. Every visitor needs a pre-booked timed ticket, members included.
It works best folded into a bigger day: the Windermere car ferry across to Near Sawrey is an event in itself, and Hawkshead village with Potter's old solicitor's office is ten minutes up the road.
What it costs: Adult £17, child (5 to 17) £8.50, family (two adults and up to three children) £42.50, one adult family £25.50. With a voluntary Gift Aid donation: £18.70, £9.40, £46.80 and £28.10. Under 5s free. National Trust members go free but still need to book a timed ticket.

Sculptures hidden through the trees turn a forest walk into a treasure hunt, with trails from buggy-flat to proper leg-stretch and Go Ape overhead. Between Windermere and Coniston, and quieter than both.
Wordsworth's school, kept as a schoolroom with the original furniture and the desk with his name carved into it. Children get an hour of dressing up, quill writing and scavenger hunts, with 1,800 books in the library upstairs.
Go Ape's high ropes in Grizedale Forest, with a mid-level course for ages 6 and up, the classic Treetop Challenge from 10 and a 3km tandem zip trek across the valley for teenagers. Pair it with the forest trails for a full day.
