Healey Dell Nature Reserve
A steep wooded gorge two miles out of Rochdale where the River Spodden churns through waterfalls beneath a 100-foot railway viaduct. Free and genuinely dramatic, but the paths are proper paths - boots, not buggies.

A reservoir with a flat lap, a good playground, pedalos and mini electric boats to hire from the water activity centre, and ice cream at both ends. The Pennines stand around it looking dramatic while you do none of the climbing. Beside the cafe on the old visitor centre site there is a free sensory garden, opened in 2024.
It is the low-effort outdoor win: buggy-friendly the whole way round, free apart from parking, and precisely as long as small legs can manage.
What it costs: Free. The council car park on Rakewood Road is pay and display from 8am to 8pm: £1 for up to an hour, rising £1 an hour to £5 for over four hours, free in the evening and free with a Blue Badge. Pedalo and boat hire at the activity centre is extra.

A big three-tier soft play in Heywood with separate areas for toddlers, infants and juniors, a spook room and aerial runways. No booking, one adult free, and weekday mornings in term time are the toddler session.

An indoor tarmac kart track in an old Rochdale mill that takes children seriously: junior sessions from age 8 in petrol karts, a Saturday morning Kids Club, and one-to-one starter coaching from age 6.
