Healey Dell Nature Reserve
A steep wooded gorge two miles out of Rochdale where the River Spodden churns through waterfalls beneath a 100-foot railway viaduct. Free and genuinely dramatic, but the paths are proper paths - boots, not buggies.
Hollingworth Lake
Rochdale, Greater Manchester
A reservoir with a flat two-mile lap, a good playground, rowing boats in season and ice cream at both ends. The Pennines stand around it looking dramatic while you do none of the climbing.
It is the low-effort outdoor win: buggy-friendly the whole way round, free apart from parking, and precisely as long as small legs can manage.
