The Campbell Bluebird exhibition is the emotional centre: full-size replicas telling the story of Malcolm and Donald Campbell's 21 land and water speed records, ending with Coniston, twenty minutes up the road, where Donald's run ended in 1967. Children who arrived for the cars leave talking about the boat.
Around it sit 30,000 exhibits, which sounds like a warehouse and reads like a century of ordinary life: a rebuilt 1930s garage, period bicycles, motorbikes, and the sweet-tin-and-petrol-pump memorabilia that has grandparents narrating unprompted. It is all indoors, it opens 363 days a year from 9.30am, and it sits by the A590 en route to everything, which makes it the Lakes' best wet-morning insurance policy.
