Illustration of Lakes Aquarium

A small aquarium at Windermere's quiet southern tip whose party trick is the tunnel walk under the lake's own fish - otters, rays and piranhas fill out the cast.

It is an hour well spent rather than a destination, which is exactly right stacked against the steam railway next door and the boats outside. The combo tickets are the sensible buy.

Its trick is staying local: the tanks follow a drop of water from mountain tarn to Morecambe Bay, so children meet the fish that actually live in the lake outside the window, plus the otters and diving ducks the Lakes hide in plain sight. The underwater tunnel under Windermere's own fish is a quieter cousin of the big-aquarium version and better for it.

It sits on Lakeside pier between the Haverthwaite steam trains and the Windermere cruises, which is the real reason to know about it: it turns the boat-and-train day into a boat, train and aquarium day without moving the car.

Thousands of vehicles and period pieces packed into a riverside mill, with the Campbell Bluebird story told properly in its own gallery. One for kids who like machines; a surprisingly good wet-weather card.
