Manley Mere's adventure trail runs for a mile and a half through 18 acres of trees beside the lake, with more than 40 obstacles: balance beams, rope swings, zip wires and lots of mud. Cheshire parents have known about it for years. Wet, screen-free and completely absorbing.
Tickets are £15 a head, and under fives and over sixties go free with a paying ticket holder. It is open every day from April to October, 10am to 5pm with last entry at 3pm, and the car park is £3 on top. Under 17s must have an adult with them the whole time, and every adult needs a waiver, which you can do online before you go. Children end up in the water, usually on purpose, so bring a full change of clothes and a towel each.
What it costs: Adventure trail £15 per person; under 5s and over 60s free with a paying ticket holder; groups of 15 or more £13.50 each. Day tickets run 10am to 5pm, last admission 3pm. The car park is £3 on top (cash for the coin box on weekdays, card at weekends and in the holidays).
A big bonfire in the bottom fields at Manley Mere, £7.50 a head, with hot dogs, burgers, hot chocolate and mulled wine. The poster promises the bonfire but does not list a firework display, so do not promise the children rockets. Anyone who fancies a cold dip first can swim and get in for £10.
