Illustration of Mill Dam Park

Mill Dam Park is one of Knowsley's four borough parks, on Mill Lane in Kirkby, and it is the town's best bet for a free afternoon outdoors. The council lists an adventure playground, a lake, wildflower meadows, wetland and woodland, plus a green gym for the adults who feel they ought to. The main footpaths are accessible, which matters with a buggy.

The cafe and the toilets are open every day from 9am to 5pm, so the usual park problem of nowhere to go is solved. There is a Play and Environment Centre too, but it only opens when the ranger is around, and the council does not publish set hours for it. It is a straightforward park, so a couple of hours is about right.

Getting there is easy without a car. Kirkby station is a 10-minute walk, several buses stop on Mill Lane, and the park sits on the Kirkby Cycle Route. Drivers come off the M57 at junction 6 onto Valley Road and follow signs for Kirkby. Walking, Nordic walking and cycling clubs use the park, so expect company on a fine weekend.

What it costs: Free entry. The council lists car parking but no charge.

Know before you go

  • Kirkby station is a 10-minute walk: turn left onto Glovers Brow, then left onto Mill Lane. Several buses stop outside on Mill Lane too.
  • The Play and Environment Centre only opens when the ranger is on site, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to go.
  • Parts of the park have dog rules under a council order, and there is a map on the council page.
