A lived-in castle above the Esk with a Hawk and Owl Centre whose flying displays are the genuine event: World of Owls at 11.30am, Sky Hunters on the Flying Meadow at 2pm and a bird display at 4pm in the main season. Gardens, adventure play and a cheerful line in ghost stories fill the rest.
It is a long drive and earns it, especially doubled with the Ravenglass railway next door. The main season ends on 23 October, after which it opens only at weekends in November, so check the dates before setting off; the display times anchor the day.
What it costs: Main season 2026 (21 March to 23 October): gardens, birds and activities pass adult £19.50, child 3 to 15 £11; castle, gardens, birds and activities pass adult £24.95, child £14.50; under 3s free. Winter weekends (7 to 29 November): from £14 adult and £9 child for the gardens pass. Flying displays at 11.30am, 2pm and 4pm in the main season.
Muncaster's big Halloween week, themed Zombies and Boggles this year: a scary maze, pumpkin patch (free pumpkin for the first 2,500 child tickets), a Halloween trail in the gardens, parades, a haunted castle, bird of prey displays and a torchlight march. The indoor Castle Show is an upgrade at £17 adult and £13 child on top.
The castle decorated, festive gardens with lights and live music, a clue trail with a small prize at the end, the owl display at 1.30pm and Father Christmas in a grotto with an early present. The Santa visit is a separate £3 timed ticket for each child on top of entry, adults do not need one. Under 3s get in free.
