A museum about how ordinary people won the vote sounds like a hard sell to an eight year old, and then they meet the enormous painted trade union banners. People's History Museum is free, sits on the edge of Spinningfields, and is better with children than its subject suggests. The galleries have hands-on interactives, and there is a quiet room for anyone who needs a break.
The trick is the family activity of the month. Through 2026 there is a Storytelling Zone for 0 to 10s, running to 31 December, and from 1 October to 30 November a drop-in skeleton mask activity inspired by a painting in Gallery One. Both are free, and the sheet from the welcome desk gives a reluctant child a job to do.
The Gather cafe does brunch and lunch, with hot food until 3pm, and there is a picnic area if you have brought sandwiches. Science and Industry Museum is a short walk away, but do not try both in one day with small ones.
What it costs: Free entry. The museum says most visitors donate £10, which is a suggestion, not a ticket. Family activities are free and drop-in.
