Science and Industry Museum
Working steam engines, the story of Cottonopolis, and hands-on galleries in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station. Free, and the live demonstrations are the bit kids actually remember.
Platt Fields Park
Manchester, Greater Manchester
A big Victorian park between Fallowfield and Rusholme with a lake at the middle of it. Around the water you get a boathouse, ducks in reliable numbers, an adventure play area for under 12s, a skatepark, a BMX track and tennis courts, all connected by flat, pram-friendly paths. Entry costs nothing and it is open dawn to dusk.
Do the lake loop first, then let the playground or the BMX track absorb the rest of the visit. There are toilets on site and free parking by the Wilmslow Road entrance, though charges can apply during events. Bring bikes or a scooter: the paths and the BMX track between them will use up more energy than the playground alone.
Platt Hall, the Georgian house in the park that held Manchester's costume collection, is closed to general visitors while the building is redeveloped, so don't promise anyone a museum. Honestly, the park doesn't need it.
Know before you go
- The parking by the Wilmslow Road entrance fills on event days - the Curry Mile is ten minutes on foot when everyone gets hungry.

Wythenshawe Park & Community Farm
A big south Manchester park with a proper community farm - pigs, goats, horses - a Tudor hall, and enough playground to earn the trip on its own. All free.
