Prescot Museum

Prescot Museum moved out of its Georgian building in 2012 and now shares the upper level of the shopping centre with the library. That reads like a downgrade on paper. In practice it means step-free access throughout, a Changing Places facility, warm rooms, free parking at the back and a library twenty feet away for when the museum runs out of steam. The collection is Knowsley's own story: watchmaking, pottery, cable making, coal mining, plus ceramics, tools, costume, coins, trophies and militaria across about 14,500 items. The children's provision is modest and does not pretend otherwise, a drawing corner, quiz sheets, family trails and an apothecary chest whose drawers you are allowed to open and search. That last one buys more time than you would think.
It is free. It takes about an hour, and it pairs neatly with an hour in Prescot town centre. The opening pattern is where it lets you down: Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday only until 1pm, closed Sundays and bank holidays. The museum is also mid-refresh, with different areas cordoned off in turn while displays are swapped out, so treat any specific object as a bonus.
Know before you go
- Closed Sundays and bank holidays, and it shuts at 1pm on Saturdays. That rules out most of the times a working parent would actually go, so plan it for a school holiday weekday.
- The museum has told visitors that sections of the displays are being replaced over the coming months and parts will be cordoned off while the work happens. It stays open throughout, but if your child has come for one specific thing, ring 0151 443 4936 first. Park free at the back of the shopping centre off Aspinall Street, and note that it fills on a Saturday morning.
Worth knowing: Best for about 4 to 11; there is a kids corner and family trails but no play equipment.
