Illustration of Stadt Moers Park

Stadt Moers is named after Moers in Germany, Knowsley's twin town, and it is built on old colliery and tip land, which is why the ground rolls the way it does. Knowsley Council keeps it as one of its four Borough Parks and the surfaced footpath and cycle network is genuinely good. About 220 acres, carved into four quadrants around Pottery Lane in Whiston. For a family day the useful bits are the playgrounds, the cycleway and the fishing pond, with an Environment Centre, a cross country course used by local clubs, an outdoor green gym and large stretches of wildflower, wetland and woodland habitat around them. None of it costs anything.

Scale is the thing to plan around. Arrive with a toddler and no wheels and you will do one playground, a short loop, and leave. Arrive with bikes or scooters and you can lose most of a morning. Whiston station is a ten to fifteen minute walk, and the 139 and 248 buses stop on Pottery Lane.

Know before you go

  • Come off the M62 at junction 6, follow the brown signs for Whiston onto Windy Arbour Road, then left onto Pottery Lane. The main car park is there and it is free. The other entrances on Cross Lane, West View, Huyton Lane and Paradise Lane have no parking worth the name.
  • A Public Space Protection Order applies here, which in practice means dog controls and behaviour rules are enforced. Worth knowing if you are bringing the dog as well as the children.

Worth knowing: Playgrounds suit toddlers upward; the wider park is a proper walk, so bring the buggy or the bikes.
