Illustration of Tam O'Shanter Urban Farm

Tam O'Shanter is what a community farm should be: free at the gate, animals close enough to actually meet, and volunteers who let kids linger at the pens rather than moving them along. The alpacas are the celebrities; the pigs do the comedy.

It is an hour's visit rather than a day, which makes it a brilliant pressure-free first farm trip with a baby or a toddler. Bidston Hill starts at the back gate when legs still have miles in them.

Know before you go

  • Combine it with the Bidston Hill windmill walk straight from the gate - the observatory and lighthouse views are free too.
  • It runs on donations and a small shop. Buy the animal feed bag; it is the best pound of the day.
