Illustration of Withy Grove Park

Withy Grove Park is the largest green space in Bamber Bridge, and South Ribble Council is developing it into one of the borough's major parks. The draw for families is the playground on the eastern side, one of the borough's flagship play areas, split into toddler, junior and teen zones so the big ones are not flattening the small ones on the same climbing frame.

The useful oddity is the lighting. The toddler and junior zones are lit until 9pm and the teen area until 10pm, so in November you can still get an hour of play after school when every other park is pitch black by five. Park for free and come in from Brindle Road on the east side, by Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre and the sports pitches.

Beyond the playground the park splits into two areas divided by woodland, with wildflower meadows and ponds. The old field boundaries are still visible to the south and west, and the name comes from the willow, or withies, once grown here for baskets and thatching. The catch for now: the cafe, public toilets and cycle parking are all listed as coming soon.

What it costs: Free entry and free car parking.

Know before you go

  • There are no public toilets yet. The council lists new toilets and a cafe as coming soon, so go before you leave home.
  • The playground lights stay on until 9pm in the toddler and junior areas and 10pm in the teen area, which makes it a rare after-tea option in the dark months.
