Farms & animals in Kendal

Working farms, animal parks and safaris. Usually the bit they actually remember.

The maize maze at Lakeland Maze Farm Park does not open until mid-July, because the corn has to grow tall enough first. Before that it is go-karts, trampolines and animal handling on a day ticket. Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is the wet-weather answer five minutes off M6 junction 35, over 100 species with the tropical hall, butterfly house and aquarium all under glass, and about £43 for a family of four. Low Sizergh Barn asks nothing for its trail, just under two miles round a working dairy farm, and the cafe has a gallery window where you watch the cows being milked.

Drive through the reserve from the car, then the sea lion and birds of prey shows. Reviews are split on value, and several warn that families expect a full zoo and find fewer headline animals, so set expectations first.

Excellent, but it is a lot of walking. Reviews rate 5 to 10 as the ideal age and still recommend a pushchair at four. Climbing frames, water play and sand pits break up the distance.
