Lowther Castle is why anyone with children drives to Penrith. The Lost Castle playground, built in the grounds of the ruin, is turrets and tunnels and drop slides and zip wires, and the estate reckons it one of the largest adventure playgrounds in the UK. It is £16 for adults, £10 for children, £45 for a family and another £2 to park, so treat it as the entire day and not a stop on the way north.
