The most excavated monastic site in Europe sounds like homework and plays like a treasure hunt: a medieval undercroft, a giant statue of St Christopher, and a walled garden that runs apple days and bug hunts through the year. Tickets are cheap, a fair chunk works in drizzle, and children remember the odd details for months.
Beyond the priory, be honest with yourself: Runcorn is a launching point. Catalyst Science Centre and Victoria Park sit just over the bridge in Widnes, Manley Mere's outdoor obstacle trail is a short drive into the Cheshire lanes, and Chester and Warrington are both within half an hour. The new town was built around fast roads, and for once that is the useful bit - everywhere is twenty minutes away. One excellent priory and quick exits: not the worst hand a town has been dealt.

Wigg Island Community Park
Fifty seven acres of nature reserve wedged between the Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal at Astmoor. Flat paths, water on both sides, a lot of birds. Nothing to climb on.

Dinosaur Trail at Bents
A prehistoric trail winding through a garden centre, with interactive bits along the way. Under-2s free, and there's a café and indoor shelter if the weather turns.
Walton Hall & Gardens
The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.
Jungle Parc
High ropes and treetop courses in the grounds at Walton Hall. Reviewers rate the value, but frame it as one for the bigger, braver kids.

Inflatables in Old Market Square every day, plus a rotating Wednesday programme across the parks and a Thursday session in Time Square. No tickets, no booking, just turn up.
