Norton Priory is the reason Runcorn is in this guide, and it earns the slot. The most excavated monastic site in Europe sounds like homework and plays like a treasure hunt: a medieval undercroft, a giant statue of St Christopher, and a walled garden that runs apple days and bug hunts through the year. Tickets are cheap, a fair chunk works in drizzle, and children remember the odd details for months.

Beyond the priory, be honest with yourself: Runcorn is a launching point. Catalyst Science Centre and Victoria Park sit just over the bridge in Widnes, Manley Mere's outdoor obstacle trail is a short drive into the Cheshire lanes, and Chester and Warrington are both within half an hour. The new town was built around fast roads, and for once that is the useful bit - everywhere is twenty minutes away. One excellent priory and quick exits: not the worst hand a town has been dealt.
