Wigan's big woodland estate stacks free and paid neatly: the woods, lawns and the Adventure Play area cost nothing, while high ropes, adventure golf and crazy golf sit there as optional upgrades.
It is genuinely possible to have a full free afternoon here and spend only the parking fee, or to turn it into a mini adventure park day. Both versions work.
The hall lawn is the picnic, the woodland is the walk, and the paid extras are what stretch it to a full day: low and high ropes courses in the trees (the high one finishes on a 40 metre zip wire), an 18 hole adventure golf course and a £1 crazy golf course. The 15 inch miniature railway is closed while volunteers redevelop it, with reopening hoped for by the end of 2026; the smaller model railway still runs on Sundays for donations. The free Adventure Play area has mini zip wires, a rope bridge, big slides and a sandpit, and the Kitchen Courtyard cafes have proper coffee, which parents of early risers rate above every other fact here.
Entry is free and you pay to park, which makes it Wigan's default big day and busy accordingly on fine weekends. Go before ten or after two and the car park behaves; arrive at half eleven with the rest of the borough and it does not.
What it costs: Checked 27 Sept 2026. Free entry. Parking: first 30 minutes free, up to 90 minutes £1.75, over 90 minutes £4, paid at the barrier on exit by cash or card. Adventure golf £5 for ages 3 to 15, £6 adults, £19.50 for a family of two adults and two children, under 3s free. Crazy golf £1 a player. Low ropes from £11, high ropes from £17.50, woodland activities from £8.50, booked through Be Well. The volunteer model railway runs on Sundays for donations.
Wigan Council's family fireworks night, and one of the earliest finishes in the region: gates at 4.30pm, fireworks at about 6.40pm, done by 7pm. Funfair and food before. A good one for a Sunday with school the next day.

An independent soft play in Wigan, going since 2013, with a 4.2 metre three-lane wavy slide, a small football and basketball court and 7,000 square feet of frame. Open every day, no booking, and cheaper on a weekday.
Pub soft play at the Red Robin: a tots area, several slides and a big ball pool for £6 a child, with adults in free and the coffee within reach. The cheap, dependable Wigan fallback.
A 28-lane standalone bowling alley on Wallgate with bumpers, ramps and lighter balls for small children, an arcade and pool. Eat, drink and bowl from £8, three games from £9.50, weekends from 9am.
