The Beacon sits on the West Strand right on Whitehaven harbour, four floors of galleries telling the story of a town that got rich on coal, tobacco, rum and shipping and then had to work out what came next. Exhibitions change regularly, so a second visit is not a repeat.
Prices are reasonable for what you get: 7.50 an adult, 4 for a child aged 4 to 16, 6 concession, 19 for a family of two adults and two children, and free for under-3s. The Howling Wolf Artisan Bakery and Cafe is on site, along with a shop.
Opening is Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm, last admission 45 minutes before closing, closed Mondays except during school holidays. There is also a quiet hour for visitors with sensory needs on the first Sunday of every month, 11am to noon. Most museums this size do not offer that.
What it costs: Adult £7.50, child aged 4 to 16 £4.00, concession for students and over-60s £6.00, family of two adults and two children £19.00, under-3s free. Parking is pay and display on site or at Quay Street car park.
The first December weekend turns the museum into the elves' workshop, ending in Santa's private office. The following weekend is a simpler meet-Santa session, with Christmas Pet Encounters running alongside.
Meet Santa at The Beacon in Whitehaven in 15 minute slots, with a festive photo and a check on the Nice List. £7.50 covers one child and two adults. Museum entry not included.
