Windermere Lake Cruises
England's biggest lake from the deck of a proper boat, with red, yellow and green routes so you can pick a 45-minute hop or a full lake cruise. Combo tickets pair it with the aquarium or the steam railway.
The Beacon Museum
Whitehaven, Cumbria
The Beacon sits on the West Strand right on Whitehaven harbour, four floors of galleries telling the story of a town that got rich on coal, tobacco, rum and shipping and then had to work out what came next. Exhibitions change regularly, so a second visit is not a repeat.
Prices are reasonable for what you get: 7.50 an adult, 4 for a child aged 4 to 16, 6 concession, 19 for a family of two adults and two children, and free for under-3s. A temporary five per cent VAT reduction running until 1 September brings those down to 6.38, 3.40, 5.10 and 16.15. The Howling Wolf Artisan Bakery and Cafe is on site, along with a shop.
Opening is Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm, closed Mondays except during school holidays. There is also a monthly quiet hour in the first hour of opening for visitors with sensory needs. Most museums this size do not offer that. Ring and ask which day it falls on.
Know before you go

- On-site parking is limited pay and display. Quay Street car park is a minute's walk and usually the better bet on a summer weekend.

Thousands of vehicles and period pieces packed into a riverside mill, with the Campbell Bluebird story told properly in its own gallery. One for kids who like machines; a surprisingly good wet-weather card.
