For years it was famously free to enter. There is now a small entry charge, and the business model still leans on the ice cream: big play areas, sand and water play, diggers and bouncy pillows, all funding themselves through the counter of what the farm calls the world's biggest ice cream shop.
Budget for the ice cream rather than fighting it. That is the deal, and it is a good one. Weekends are heaving; a weekday visit transforms it.
Entry is priced from £1.50 for adults and £2 for children, with under 1s free, and it covers parking and unlimited play in Daisy's Garden, the outdoor all-weather play area. Everything else is paid per child, per go, at £4.50 for most attractions: Strawberry Falls mini golf, Honeycomb Canyon sand and water play, Gemstone Cove treasure sifting, the Marshmallow Mound bouncy pillows, the Fun Factory soft play and the arcade. A Play Pass bundle cuts the price per go and can be shared between children and across visits, but the mini attractions (Silvercone, Mini Scoop and Mini Tractors) are contactless card only.
The Parlour remains the point of the place: more than fifty flavours of Cheshire Farm ice cream. The honest way to cost a visit is entry plus two plays per child plus ice creams, which for two adults and two children comes to about £25 before anyone has chosen a flavour.

An afternoon of play at the farm with a firework finale 'without the loud bangs' at about 6.30pm, which makes it a gentle first fireworks for a nervous three-year-old. Only ticket holders are on site after 2pm.
The Ice Cream Farm's grotto runs for the last fortnight before Christmas, with Breakfast with Santa and Storytime with Santa sessions on selected mornings. An SEN-friendly grotto and breakfast run earlier, on Saturday 28 November.

Excellent, but it is a lot of walking. Reviews rate 5 to 10 as the ideal age and still recommend a pushchair at four. Climbing frames, water play and sand pits break up the distance.
More than a kilometre of muddy obstacles, rope swings, wobbly bridges and big slides through a Cheshire valley. Children come off it filthy, soaked and asking to go round again. This is the point; dress accordingly.
A ruined castle on a crag with views from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains, a reconstructed Bronze Age roundhouse and woodland paths below the walls. Castles do not need roofs to work for this age group.
Chester's Roman story done properly: real tombstones from the fortress walls, a hands-on natural history gallery, and a walk-through period house at the back. Free, central, and the right size.
Chester's Victorian park above the river, with a miniature railway looping the lawns, a good playground and open-air theatre in summer. Pair with a boat trip from the Groves below.
A big warehouse of trampolines, drop slides, laser tag and e-karts on the business park before Chester. Loud, sweaty and reliably popular, and the off-peak slots are the value play.
