Chester Racecourse sits on the Roodee, right beside the city, and on most racedays it is a grown-up affair of fascinators and bars. It is friendlier to children than that suggests: under-18s go free in the general admission areas, and the Roodee enclosure is the one it pitches at families. Two enclosures, The Garden and the Winning Post, are adults only.
The date that matters is Family Fun Day. The 2026 edition on 2 August drew about 20,000 people for an afternoon of racing with fairground rides, PAW Patrol characters, a Raver Tots family rave and a pantomime horse race. The next one is Sunday 1 August 2027. Parking on the day is £12 and cannot be booked in advance.
Outside the racing season the course does one family night: the Lord Mayor's Spooktacular Fireworks on Saturday 31 October 2026, with a junior display, a main display and a fairground. General admission is £10, under-5s free, and the rides cost extra. Racing itself returns with the May Festival on 5 May 2027.
What it costs: Children aged 17 and under go free on racedays in the general admission areas; hospitality areas need a pre-booked child ticket. Raceday car parking is £12 a car and cannot be bought in advance for Family Day. The Lord Mayor's Spooktacular Fireworks general admission is £10 a person, under-5s free with an adult, fairground rides extra. Adult raceday prices vary by fixture and were not checked.
Halloween and fireworks in one go on the Roodee, with a junior display at 6.45pm, the main show at 7.30pm and a fairground until 9pm. General admission is £10 and under 5s go free. There is no parking at the course and it is cashless, so bring a card.

Excellent, but it is a lot of walking. Reviews rate 5 to 10 as the ideal age and still recommend a pushchair at four. Climbing frames, water play and sand pits break up the distance.
A small entry fee, then £4.50 a go for most attractions: sand and water play, mini golf, bouncy pillows, a racing track and soft play, all funded by what the farm calls the world's biggest ice cream shop. Cheap to get in, easy to spend in.
More than a kilometre of muddy obstacles, rope swings, wobbly bridges and big slides through a Cheshire valley. Children come off it filthy, soaked and asking to go round again. This is the point; dress accordingly.
A ruined castle on a crag with views from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains, a reconstructed Bronze Age roundhouse and woodland paths below the walls. Castles do not need roofs to work for this age group.
Chester's Roman story done properly: real tombstones from the fortress walls, a hands-on natural history gallery, and a walk-through period house at the back. Free, central, and the right size.
Chester's Victorian park above the river, with a miniature railway looping the lawns, a good playground and open-air theatre in summer. Pair with a boat trip from the Groves below.
