The cheapest real activity anyone is recommending this summer, and it's indoors. An hour of play for a fiver a head, with picnic benches for when you need to sit down.
Trafford, Greater Manchester

Mini golf with a budget: two 18-hole courses, the Rapids and the Volcano, wind past life-sized dinosaurs on the edge of TraffordCity, next to the Trafford Golf Centre driving range. It works from about age 3, toddlers can walk round free, and no one needs to have held a putter before.
Adults pay £10, under 16s £8, and a family of four plays one course for £32. Finish a course and the second is half price the same day, which is how most visits with keen kids end up going. It opens from 7am daily with last rounds an hour before close, parking is free, and the whole place is card only.
It is outdoors, so pick your weather, though the courses are lit after dark and a floodlit round past a T. rex has its own appeal. The golf centre's bar and kitchen handles the post-match debrief.
Worth knowing: Under 12s need an adult with them.

Two rides, a 4D cinema, build zones and Manchester's skyline done in miniature bricks. Squarely aimed at 3 to 10, and it knows it: adults can only visit with a child.

Ocean tunnel, rays, seahorses and rockpool touch sessions, sized for smaller legs - you can do the whole thing in a morning and pair it with Legoland next door.

Real snow all year round at the venue Manchester still calls Chill Factore. Little ones get the Snow Park with sledging and slides; older kids can learn to ski or board on the UK's longest indoor slope.

One of the biggest soft play arenas in Europe: a vast frame, go-karts, laser tag and a zip wire that crosses the entire building. Older primary kids do not age out of this one.

A Georgian house in a deer park where the fallow deer wander right past you. This summer's Play Hub adds giant games and den building in the North Park, and the winter garden is the area's best cold-day walk.
