Walton Hall & Gardens
The reliable default: gardens, a children's zoo, a big playground and plenty of room to run. Pay for parking, nothing else.

Discobowl runs the bowling alley in Golden Square, Warrington's shopping centre, and has filled it with more than bowling: Scrapyard Golf, an indoor crazy golf course themed like an industrial scrapyard, an arcade of claw machines, racing games and air hockey, pool tables, interactive darts and a soft play zone for toddlers and young children. It opens at 9am every day, which matters more than you'd think on a wet Saturday with small early risers.
The early bird is the deal: £3 a game from 9am to 11am every day. Otherwise one game is £8, two are £10, and a family game for four is £28 with at least one adult and one junior. On term-time weekdays from 3pm to 6pm, After School Club gives a child a game and a kids' meal for £6.95, though not in December. A round of Scrapyard Golf is £6, a bowling and golf combo £12, and £40 for a family of four.
Soft play is £7 for a child aged 2 and over, and parents go free. The rules are the usual ones: shoes off, socks on, an adult watching at all times. Later in the day it turns into a night-out venue with a bar, open until midnight on Saturdays, and under 18s need an adult with them after 8pm. The arcade is the cost nobody budgets for, so agree the limit in the car.
What it costs: Bowling £8 for one game or £10 for two; a family game for up to four is £28 (two games £38), with at least one adult and one junior. Early bird £3 a game, 9am to 11am every day. After School Club (a game plus a kids' meal) £6.95, Monday to Friday 3pm to 6pm, not in school holidays, bank holidays or December. Scrapyard Golf £6 a round; bowling and golf combo £12, or £40 for a family of four. Soft play £7 for a child aged 2+, parents free.
Worth knowing: Under 18s must be with an adult after 8pm and are not allowed in the bar area after 9pm.

Treetop rope courses in the woods at Walton Hall Gardens. The Warrington site runs the Adventurer course, built for children from age 4 with a minimum height of 1.05m, with over 60 activities at different heights. Children £19; supervising adults walking below go free.

A theme park deliberately built for ages 2 to 13 rather than teenagers, so both of them can ride most of it. The classic full-day option on your doorstep.

An adventure farm off Stretton Road built for 4 to 12s: tractor trailer rides, zip wires, drop slides, jumping pillows, roller skating and a tent full of inflatables. Despite the name there are no animals to see, and in October it turns into Spooky World's daytime Fun-By-Day.

Two-tier soft play frame, low climbing wall, pirate ship, crawl tubes and a bouncy slide, plus Messy Monday and sensory sessions during the week.

Bigger than the average soft play: multi-level frame, a spooky room, an astro slide, a climbing wall, two mini bowling lanes and a slot racing track. The bowling is what makes it work when you have a toddler and a seven-year-old to keep happy at once.
