For twenty-odd years Europa Pools meant the fun pool. Flumes, a wave machine, the lot. That closed after the pandemic and the decision to convert the space into a fitness area was signed off by committee in June 2022.
It has not reopened. A change.org petition has been running since 2024, and the Active Wirral page now simply lists the leisure pool as closed. Anyone going on memory will have a bad afternoon.
What remains is still worth the trip. There is a 25 metre competition pool held at 28 degrees, which is warmer than most club pools, and all public swimming now happens in it. Junior swims are £3.95 and adults £6.45, with a family of four at £17.20. There is a hoist and graduated steps for anyone who needs them.
The quiet win is the soft play, three floors of it for nought to sixes, and it is a flat £4.20 a child whenever you turn up. No booking, no peak rate, no holiday surcharge. A wet Tuesday morning with a toddler costs four pounds twenty and buys you a coffee sat down.
What it costs: Active Wirral pay as you go: junior swim £3.95, adult swim £6.45, family swim for four £17.20, family swim for six £22.90. Soft play for ages 0 to 6: £4.20 per child, walk-in, no booking required. Steam room £5.20 (minimum age 16), included with Invigor8 membership, but closed for urgent maintenance at the moment.
Worth knowing: The old fun pool with the flumes and wave machine is gone for good. Do not promise it.

A hands-on science centre built precisely for this age group - walk-through lungs and a supersize brain in the new Bodies gallery, inventions to test, and the ferry stop is literally outside. Entry converts to an annual pass, which changes the maths entirely.
Beach, marine lake and Fort Perch Rock at the river mouth, with the Liverpool skyline across the water. Sandcastles when the tide allows, chips on the front to finish.
University of Liverpool's gardens above the Dee estuary: family trails, a wildflower meadow, a good playground and views across to Wales. Quieter than the National Trust circuit and better value.
Britain's first country park: a clifftop path above the Dee, a beach for fossicking below, and a visitor centre with bird hides. Wild-feeling without being remote.
A free community farm under Bidston Hill: pigs, goats, alpacas and hens, a woodland on the doorstep, and a café doing proper bacon butties. One of Merseyside's best zero-cost mornings.
