Bents is a garden centre first, but out the back sits an 18-hole adventure golf course that earns the drive on its own. You start in a prehistoric set with life-sized dinosaurs, some animatronic and some static, and finish in a pirate seascape with creaking shipwrecks and creatures of the deep. It is all outdoors, so this is a dry-day plan.

Tickets are £7.50 for anyone 12 and over, £5.50 for 4 to 11s and £4.50 for under 4s, or £21 for two adults and two children. A parent who just wants to walk round with the toddler pays £2. Online booking is recommended, and every child under 12 needs an adult with them on the course.

Autumn changes things. By October it is weekends only, 11 until 4. The course has its own cafe for drinks and bakes, and the rest of Bents, with its restaurant and the Christmas Light Walk in season, makes it easy to stretch a round into an afternoon, which is either a bonus or a hazard depending on the budget.

What it costs: Explorer (12 and over) £7.50, Junior Explorer (4 to 11) £5.50, Mini Explorer (under 4) £4.50, Family (two adults and two children) £21. A non-playing adult is £2, free for Bents be inspired members, and must be with a paying player.

Know before you go

Hours shrink as the year goes on: from 7 September it is weekdays 11 to 4, Saturdays 10 to 5 and Sundays 11 to 4, then from 5 October weekends only, 11 to 4. Last ball is 30 minutes before closing.
It does not open in the evenings during the Bents Christmas Light Walk, so a golf-then-lights plan does not work. Go in daylight.

Worth knowing: Under 12s must be with an adult.
