Manchester United Museum & Stadium Tour

This is the one a football-mad child remembers. The museum runs across three floors of trophies and club history, including the Munich memorial room, and the guided tour takes you down the players' tunnel, into the home and away dressing rooms, past the press room and out to the dugouts. The guides know their stuff and pitch it well for kids.
Allow two and a half to three hours for tour plus museum, and book ahead online. It does not run on home match days, so check the fixtures first. The Red Cafe covers lunch and there is parking at the ground. It is a proper spend for a family of four, but as football pilgrimages go it delivers.
One honest note: the tour is 70 minutes of walking and listening, which is a long time for a preschooler. Under fives go cheap or free, but this works far better once they actually care whose dressing room it is.

- Morning slots are quietest, and you will not get out without passing the megastore, so set a budget before you go in.

Dunham Massey
A Georgian house in a deer park where the fallow deer wander right past you. This summer's Play Hub adds giant games and den building in the North Park, and the winter garden is the area's best cold-day walk.
